My '67 Stepside build

I've been lurking for a long time, posting a few questions now and then. I'm officially starting my journey to rebuild my '67 step side. I had been trying to buy this old truck from a dear old bluegrass pickin' buddy of mine. It was his fathers truck when new and became his when his father passed. He drove it until '87 when he got a new Chevy 4x4. At that time it was parked in the field behind his house. The '67 is a 4x4 Shorty stepside that came with AC, brakes and steering, it's got a 292 4 speed. My old friend always told me he was gonna fix it up when he got old....well he is just past 80 now and sadly has started showing signs of dementia. I heard about a year ago that his son was making some calls to find out what the truck was worth so I assumed that meant he was ready to sell. Long story short, I bought the truck and have set on it for the last year due to several family medical issues consuming all of my time. After some input from some of the forum members here, a carb rebuild, a distributor cap, points, plugs.. i got it started...after the victory dance i am starting to evaluate where i'm at with her. amazing..absolutely no smoke when running, the power steering works great, and i even put it in 4 wheel drive and it is working. There are no brakes whatsoever, but i took a drive today around my field. so over the next while, I will be attempting to make the 'ol girl breathe again. I want to offer thanks for any of you in advance that will be answering my questions that are sure to come. My first inclination is to get it mechanically sound and drive it with the rust and funky ol patina. Once mechanically sound, i'll decide whether to restore the body or just drive it in all of it's present glory.

Re: My '67 Stepside build

That's a purdy dang exceptional truck with the options and just being a '67 SWB K/10...kinda rare. I'm glad you got it,but sorry to hear about your friend's condition. Pickup trucks and bluegrass music, throw in a hound dog and a little place in the country and you have it all!

Re: My '67 Stepside build

I've posted some of these previously, but I'll include them here, so I'll remember what I started with.

baby steps to date:
removed coffee can full of mouse feces
distributor cap, points, plugs, plug wires
carb rebuild kit
new aluminum radiator
valve cover gasket and fresh coat of paint on the cover
oil change
used set of rallys & old tires
added power steering fluid... (it worked!)

It was originally silver on silver. Here is a shot of the original seat after tearing off the cover that was on it.

That seat tells a story. Not much wear on that truck. And,about the hound dog...I need to get another one. My ole Buddy passed away a few years ago

Re: My '67 Stepside build

Started on the brakes this evening and already hit a bump. It appears that there is no way the wheel cylinder on the front is coming out from under the bracket. I'm soaking the bolts with PBS blaster but it still appears there must be a trick to pulling the cylinder. Am I wrong?

Timbro, there's tons of rescue hounds out there that would just love to have a home with you.And they'll let you pet them and dream while you wait for the penetrating oil to soak.
Take the brake line loose first then the bolts and it should come out.

Re: My '67 Stepside build

K/10 4x4 Stepsides with a 292 L6 are rare. P/S in '67 4x4 even rarer. I'd be interested in pix of the P/S bracket and the under engine cross-member. If some slick operator talks you into transplanting with a V8, try to save these rare 292-only parts.
Better yet keep it like it was, only working.

BTW I rescued a GSD, "Lola" last year, about 22 months after "Gunji" my old Shepherd died. I waited way too long. Now she's well used to me and loves riding shotgun in my '68 C/10 Stepside w/292 L6.

Very nice truck with some rare options
Be sure to check in the springs of that seat for the build sheet.
Do you have a picture of the option decal inside the glove box?

it actuallly has two logos... the first reads "Allison Feed and Seed, Salem, MO"

the father of my friend i bought it from apparently was partners in the feed store back in the day... then he changed it to his name at some point..

the second logo reads "Gus Nash and Sons Salem, MO"

I'm trying to find someone who might have a picture of it when it was the feed store shop truck.

Nice truck..a shop truck at that. Would be cool if you could replicate the shop truck avatar on the doors in the future.

probably wont get talked into a v8... considered it, but the 292 starts and runs really well. drove it a couple times (without brakes) and it has alot of torque... just kind of cool having it original as possible. I may try to find a solid 2wd to put in a 5.3l and 4l60e tranny i have waiting for a home.

Re: My '67 Stepside build

That glovebox sheet has something going on at the top.
Looks like some overprint and special paint code
Maybe a 67 thing but other years the pait is listed like an option unless ordered
This would be something that member chipflyer would be intrested to see.
He can reproduce these build sheets and knows alot of the option codes
