LT1 Swappers....

I need some advice on the swap.....

I might be trading a jeep i have for a 450hp LT1 with a trans still bolted he is saying 700R4 but they never had 700s except i believe in some early vettes. but anywho i will know which trans the second i see it.

He has the harness and the computer to go with the motor and trans....

i plan on installing this into my 78 Long bed currently running a stock 350 and th350.

I have done several swaps on cars. but its normally been from one car to another so i had everything right there.

What things for this swap will i need to buy/find.

I know the wiring will be a pain and will have to be played with. But is it worth screwing with the harness or is there a company i can send it to and they make it a plug and play?

Fuel system- What is the best route to go? can i drop a sending unit/pump in my stock tanks and replace with high psi line?

What other problems are things to look at? exhaust wont be a problem i have a buddy who owns a shop and will knock out my exhaust for me.

Any help would be appreciated!!!

Re: LT1 Swappers....

Heres how the truck sits now, so needless to say its not like an OMG it has to be done right now, im researching everything right now. Hopefully by the upcoming weekend the frame will be wire brushed and painted and the bottom of the bed with be cleaned brushed and coated and put back on and get the front lowered.

The jacked up body work was done by the PO with the crappy paint job (hopefully that will be attended to shortly) and sorry the wheels arent polished haha, been real busy!

I flipped the rear with these brackets. and was a cake job to do! i fully recommend them if you want to lower it on a budget

These guys have the brackets you'll need or want.

I am looking to do the LT1 swap in my truck when rebuild time comes, but I am going to do it with a Q-jet. Standard 1 7/8 headers from what I read are the choice from a chevelle or camaro.

Call street and performance in Mena, AR and they can tell you everything you need for the swap and sell it to you as we'll. We stopped there on power tour and that ace had it going on. Leaders on fuel injection as well as swaps.

Yes the factory bracket requires clearencing the frame if you do not buy it. Plus it makes replacement much easier in the future too.

Re: LT1 Swappers....

I had a '79 with an LT1 swap in it, and it worked pretty well. S&P is a little pricy, but the swap itself isn't really that hard, even if you leave it injected. I would suggest a stand alone harness (I have had good luck with www.fuelinjectionconnection.com , but the '79 had a Painless harness), either swapping to '87 tank and lines, or running an inline pump, and I used brackets from Alan Groves.

Re: LT1 Swappers....

Something else to keep in mind is the ease of putting this engine in. Putting the compressor up high, it will use the same engine mounting as the SBC that came out. If you have a 9" tailshaft 350, the 4L60E will use the same driveshaft, you just have to move the crossmember. Mine had decent power and got pretty good mileage, and proved pretty trouble free. I bought the truck after a fuel line had come loose and burned up the wiring harness, so a lot of the hard (uh, expensive) stuff was already done. I would definitely do one again, though.

If your lt1 has ac then you will need to get a sbc pass. side mount as the lt1 has a slightly different mount upside down to make room for the ac compressor. At least mine from a b-body (caprice/impala/roadmaster) did.

Re: LT1 Swappers....

So the things i need to look for is a stand alone harness for the fuel? I honestly was just goign to wire up a a *Race* fuel system, where the fuel pumps run on a fused toggle switch, or fused off the ignition. Is that possible? I searched that FIC.com website and all i see are injectors.

im not sure what tailshaft i have on my truck but i have a local shop that does amazing jobs on d-shafts

Might need a AC bracket, but like i said worse case for drivability i will put a delete pulley in it and when winter comes towards an end i will play with it then.

what am i missing?

Re: LT1 Swappers....

The harness would only be needed if you were keeping it injected. If you weren't, I don't know that I would bother with the swap (IMHO).

It puts out a bit under 350HP/400TQ with a simple rebuild, and bolt-ons.

Which is why I will get one for my own project.

Re: LT1 Swappers....

If it really has that much power , (I don't believe anyone's claims without knowing who really built it or I see a dyno sheet) Its a stock 275hp LT1, if it is a true 700r4 with a TV cable, then its a 93 camaro unit. after 93 they all had 4l60E with will not stand up to hardly the 275hp much less a 450hp one..lol LT1's eat 4l60's for lunch stock.

true..... to a point. My 4l60 held up amazing with EVERYTHING stock all I had was a ext. trans cooler and it held up great to my 4-450hp 383 and i build my motor and to the wheels she put down around 370-380. but the deal eventually fell through so my truck wont be getting a lt1.... atleast this one. I really want to build a nasty 383 but money is getting tight especially with christmas coming up and the military doesnt pay well enough to have 2 toys and a gas sipping car that i cant leave alone haha heres how my driveway sits, with my buddies BMW i am getting running after 5 years. but my poor truck has been untouched for the last couple months i really wanted to get exhaust on her and start prepping the body for paint but have just completely lost all time

and thats not showing his 06 charger infront of my house or his 91 ram we just picked up lol

Re: LT1 Swappers....

Bringing this back up as to not have to start a new thread......

Now a year later here is where I am, Jeep is gone, Bought a 94 z28, painted the truck (kinda haha) and threw some riddlers on it. and purchased an 07 Trailblazer SS.....

ABout a month ago I noticed I wiped out the cam, so i bought a summit 1103 cam and lifter set and was happy.... until I destroyed the bottom end. Now I am trying to figure out what to do. I am thinking either throw a stock 350 back in just to get around OR pull the driveline from the camaro and throw in the truck. the camaro runs and drives and does everything perfectly fine.

What issues will I run into with this? I have it all, harness, computer, motor, trans...

Re: LT1 Swappers....

I think the only issue (other than the engine mount and ac compressor location) will be the wiring. It's a pita if you're keeping the engine fuel injected.

Re: LT1 Swappers....

I am in luck because I have the harness computer and everything. I drove my camaro into the garage and pushed it out. Just pulled everything today. hopefully wednesday get it set in the truck and next weekend be able to hear it run.... HOPEFULLY I am finding a few things that are going to fight me and things I want to clean up but all in time.
