Just venting a bit
Well Arrrrrrrrrgggggggggg,
I think I just ruined a perfect rebuilt ZZ4 engine. Ready to do the break-in today, primed oil pump, setup timing to 10 degrees, primed the fuel bowl, and everything by the book, she didn't even try to start, after the 4th crank I get a high pitch squeal like metal on metal from the back of the block. Looks its back to the old engine that I took out because of burning alot of oil. |

Re: Just venting a bit
Are you sure its starter not engaging the ring gear properly?

Re: Just venting a bit
If the solenoid is week, it might not engage the bendix drive properly or the bendix drive could be bad or the started isn't aligned properly

Re: Just venting a bit
Thanks Jon, just checked all that, but everything looks on the starter side of things.

Re: Just venting a bit
what's got me pissed is that the motor wouldn't even try to fire up there was on little backfire and that was it, it just keeps spitting fuel up in the air, I tried advancing and retarding and still getting the same results. AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH

Re: Just venting a bit
You must have the distributor out 180 degrees. Easy mistake and very common. Who put the motor together?

Re: Just venting a bit
Short block was built by a pretty reputable builder in manitoba, flipping the dizzy 180 will be the next thing I will be checking tomorrow after work.

Re: Just venting a bit
I would try rotating the distributor 180 first. As for the squealing noise, I'm sure the starter is to blame, just looking won't tell you whats wrong. I'm assuming that it makes this squealing when you hit the starter right?

Good luck with it and don't get discouraged, there's always a solution. Sometimes it's best to walk away for a while, ask for second opinions and the solution becomes clear

Re: Just venting a bit
Do you have a flywheel dust shield on? (particularly a manual trans but possibly an auto will do it too)
I had one that was rubbing the crank flange and made a hell of a metal squeel/screetch when I fired up my first 454. Scared the hell out of me.

I have also done the 180 out thing...it will spit and sputter just enough to give you hope, but it will never start that way...it will catch your Q-Jet on fire though.
