help me start my 305,
I recently bought a 305 engine out of a 1976 Chevy c10
Now I was told it works good, But I have some concerns if it really does work, I have it in an small engine stand I want to try to get it started before I drop it in on my truck I have never done this before, I just want a simple start, maybe have it running for 10 mins, I want help on how to do the wiring and all that stuff Some diagrams would help! Thanks Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: help me start my 305,
Battery power to the distributor. Ground the engine and battery to stand power to big terminal on starter. Small terminal closes to the terminal is ignition switch for the starter. Have a radiator and some water for ten min running time.

Re: help me start my 305,
Before you wire it up remember a toggle switch between the battery and distributor so your able to shut it off

Re: help me start my 305,
The signal wire to the small terminal on the starter. Hook that up to a button and when under power it will crank the engine over

Re: help me start my 305,
The starter does spin, but I noticed that the flywheel is short and doesnt even touch the
Starter, the engine I bought is from a manual transmissiom, and the flywheel I have is from a automatic transmission,, U found some info online that it says the starter from an auto trans is different from a manual trans,,,,, maybe thats the issue?? Or I have a wrong flywheel? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: help me start my 305,
Is it not reaching when it comes out or is it like the flywheel is to small?

Re: help me start my 305,
You prob have the 153 tooth flywheel. Try a starter for that style flywheel

Re: help me start my 305,
do you have this on an engine stand like one you can buy at autozone for like 40 bucks? or an engine run stand? even just to start it the rattle of the motor can easily tip that engine stand over and do a lot more damage thenyou will desire....

Re: help me start my 305,
I bought a 1,000LB engine stand for $60
And just incase I have a heavy duty cherry picker holding the engine, Incase if flips over the cherry picker will definitely hold it Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: help me start my 305,
idk if id leave it running for 10 min, but that is just me, I have had a big block spin completely over before and luckily all it did was trash my valve covers and that was on a 1500lb stand with 4 bags of sand on the legs so i built an extremey sturdy engine run stand that has witheld me taking a big block up to 3500 rpm

Re: help me start my 305,
I still say take a video of it! So we can all see it bouncing around the shop!
An engine stand and a cherry picker isn't going to slow it down. Better to start it on the floor. |

Re: help me start my 305,
I'm in the process of wiring up my engine now. I do know that the bolted terminal on the alternator goes to the main starter terminal were the battery cable connects

how often do you plan on running it? lol but the main post should go to your battery power. and as far as i know you should be fine as long as you arent running for hours on end

Re: help me start my 305,
here is the video, i was not able to keep it running, it kept shutting off,
the guy i bought it from told me the carb had water in, so im guessing carb doesnt work, but i do have an extra Holley carb, also the carb was leaking gas everywhere, so im asking you guys how do u hear the engine? is it good? it does start right up but it shutts off cuz theres not enough gas getting to carb |
