My daughter's '46 International P/U

In 2011, Diana was helping me get parts at a local wrecker. I showed her the bed of this truck because it was unique. Has anyone else seen an imprinted bed like this before? Diana fell in love with the truck after seeing the bed and decided to make it a "Dad and Me" Project.



This tree was grown into the grill. After we cut the tree, it took both of us to push it over. It was about 60' tall.



This truck was buried half way down the tailgate and tapered up to the front of the vehicle. It took "some" effort (and digging)to get it out.



I'm thinking the upholstery might need cleaning...

YES!!!! SUCCESS AT LAST!!!!



Diana already cleaning it up the moment they brought it home. This is an old work truck for "Bendix Driers."



"In" on a jack, hopefully "out" under it's own power!

Using the torch for the first time, Diana was knocking off old bolts from a loose bumper found at the wrecker. Diana plans to take an active part in the building of her truck



Diana enjoys documenting every bolt coming off of the truck, here is half....



and here is the other half. She even said we need to hire a photographer so one of us didn't have to stop to take pictures! She has taken over 110 pictures already! We will spare you every "documentation!" Just thought you'd enjoy the laugh!



D's first ride!



The stake pockets are mangled, so substitutes from a '48 Chevy box are being removed to be used.



Diana broke two drill bits and was devastated! She documented their demise! LOL.



Tearing apart the parts truck, with Diana's dog "Hunter" (don't ask!)



"What did I get myself into?" Good start for only being $150 in total project costs so far!

Cleaning the frame. The S10 in the back ground is the other parts truck.



The first mock up. Me thinks the nose may need to come down just a weee tad.



The frame needs to be stretched about 7".



Diana's truck came with only the right rear fender. It is in very poor shape so we began looking for two replacements. We located an individual near us that has four International trucks and one panel. He agreed to sell us the one pair of rear fenders he had and some other parts we needed. After trying to complete the transaction for many months we basically gave up. Recently we stopped by and tried one last time. SUCCESS!!! We were able to get the fenders.

The bed was standing on end against a tree and was frozen to the ground (as evidenced by the grass and dirt).





We were also missing the hood. A friend of ours agreed to sell us this one for a good price.



Let the straightening begin.



Our front fenders are not the best between being in an accident and the multiple spider webs of cracks. We picked this truck up for $100 and three aluminum rims. It donated the front end and running boards.



There are no cracks, just a few large dents and some rust.





Unfortunately, the wheel wells are larger than a pickups.



Mocking up with a very rough pattern from the p/u fenders. We'll probably close the openings up using the wheelwells from the p/u.



Starting to look like a truck again. The front cab mounts are in and the frame horns have been trimmed off to allow the front end to fit down where it belongs.

The new tranny mount.



The SBC and 700 R4 are in place.



The S10 steering column was installed. Unfortunately, it's about 6 inches too short.




We removed the fenders from the recently acquired p/u box. Here is the left one we are using.



Comparing the new right fender with the one that came with the truck.







We decided to go with the new one and replace what was missing so we cut the bottom off the original fender. It was in poor shape, so we kept as much of the new fender as possible.







Trying to figure out the wheelbase as Diana wants a short bed. She is leaning towards staying with the 108" frame as it is and not stretching it any.



The build continues.... While trying to decide how much to shorten the bed sides, we found the 2 WD rearend was 5 inches too narrow for the tires to fit up into the fenders properly. After a lot of digging we pulled out the 4 WD frame from the back yard, removed the gas tank and rearend. The rearends were then swapped out.



One thing that drives me nuts is seeing a rounded cab matched up to a flat fronted p/u bed. Due to the thickness of the bedsides and the "pattern" on them, Diana did not want to take a chance of trying to bow the front panel of the bed to match the curve of the cab. As is the gap from the front of the bed, at the outside edge, to the cab was around 2 3/4 inches. It didn't bother Diana, but an executive decision was made when she was unavailable for comment......



The lower half of the back of the cab was removed. She was shocked, but liked it when she saw the difference.



The third time's the charm. We were able to p/u this nose about 1.5 miles from home. It's in great shape and has the proper size wheel wells.

Man,what a build.I worked for a guy who did a Binder.If you find a part for one,it usually arrives as a box of rust barely useable for a pattern and here you go and get useable stuff.Looks like a cool truck and relationship building project.Yu'll be glad she took all those photos soon.

The build has been on hold for over a year. Diana does not want me working on it without her. She graduated from high school this last summer after going to high school and college full time as well as working at 3 jobs to fund the truck. She is finishing her associates degree right now as well as working and then we will dive back into it.

We will be. It will go straight across so the bed can suck in close. She wasn't happy about it at first, but after seeing the new mock up she is.

Those box sides look custom made, but they are cool! The original international box had stamped sections down the side, as your probably already know. It will sure make her truck unique though! Love the binders, my dad has a '41.

What a girl, She reminds me of my Wife. The 64 stepper we own is hers and she helps me work on it but whatever we do has to be approved by her 1st. The memories your making are outstanding

We now know this is a Knox box. International wasn't able to keep up with production, so the Knox company helped them out. These beds are kind of rare. We are still trying to find a tailgate for it. So far we have found 2. One guy wouldn't sell and the other wanted $2,000 for it, but the rest of the field fresh truck came along for free. Not cost effective for us from the lower '48.

The snow pictures are from 2011.

We just picked up 2 more trucks and hauled them home last week so she can can have a stainless grill. A buddy is taking the remains of one and the other will be parted out due to TONS of rust. I'll post pic's soon.

It's been quite awhile. Diana has been busy with high school, college and 2 jobs. She graduated high school last summer and is almost done with her associates degree. She wants me to wait to continue on her truck until she has more time.

One thing she has wanted for her truck is a stainless grill. We have parts of several mangled ones and a couple of weeks ago we found another.





After getting it home and starting to work on the grill, I found it really wasn't time effective to fix between the damage and the rust.

A buddy had already bought the cab from the above truck and the frontend previously pictured from Diana's truck so I went and talked to the owner of this blue truck and he gave it to Diana. It looks way better in the pic's than what it is because it is reeeeally rusty, but the grill is nice. It will be way faster to fix the dents and drill holes for the stainless than fix the stainless grill.







Well that's it for now.

I've actually found 3 more just driving around lately. Most people saved everything up here because it is expensive to get parts for anything (cars or housewares). A couple of guys I have talked to fly around and find cars. Then they go find them on the ground. Some finds include a few Hemi cars and SS Chevelles.

I've signed up~ you are going to let Diana write some of the posts in the near future? I have 3 daughters, and I guess I failed in getting them interested in classic car fun! computers, cell phone texting and boys won out!

This is a fun build to watch the build,,what a dad you are ,,not all dads would get into something this big with his daughter let alone even with a son,, hats off to you for doing so,, and she is a real dads daughter too.. what a bond with an ol corn binder this has become .. I,m hooked ,,stay tuned is my reply ,,very good work to both of you..


My dad owned one about that year and it too had the waffle design inside of the bed,, must of been a company done thing?
(short story for ya) My dad loaned his truck to some people to move about 150 miles and they blew the engine and where they left the truck when they blew it the guy there wanted storage fees that cost more than the truck was worth,, dad never seen the truck again..
