Sloppy steering?

Is there a way to adjust the steering rack? My steering is sloppy and has too much play for my liking. My truck is a '73 with power steering.

i need to try that, i dont expect too much. i also deleted the rag joint. trashing the old rubber bushings and installing energy suspensions bushings helped the most

Re: Sloppy steering?

Have you checked your ball joints, tie rod ends, and drag link? If those are bad the steering will be really sloppy. Fought this on my 75 forever.

Is it too tight on either end now?

Re: Sloppy steering?

This seems almost too good to be true...Is there any reason not to do it? What should a normal amount of "play" in the steering be?

Re: Sloppy steering?

The over center adjustment will only adjust the slop in the center of your steering. If its to tight it will normally cause the wheel to stick as you turn. This is usually because the steering boxes internally don't wear evenly.

What do you mean by too tight on either end? It seems to work great

Basically what Insidious '86 wrote. The steering gearbox is likely worn more with the wheels pointing forward and taking the slop out of this position may make it too tight when you go off center.

At least that's what I've read before when I was investigating what to do.

That said, besides being sloppy, my gearbox is leaking quite a bit from the input shaft - will likely replace with a rebuilt.
