In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

I have run into a problem with the nice Hooker mandrel bent exhaust shstem i bought for my 72 c10 swb ss with a 350 sbc. Its currentl equipped with oem rams horn manifolds. I believe they are 2" outlets (?) both sides have the curved swept back oultets.

I purchase this exhaust kit from summit racing equipment

http://m.summitracing.com/parts/hok-16621hkr

Problem #1 is i didnt notice that the kit is listed to fit lwb trucks only.

Problem #2 is the pipes are 2-1/4" and are flared out to mate to the manifold using a donut gasket. The flare is too large to fit in between the three manifold studs.

I figured I would swap the oem manifolds for a set of corvette manifolds with a 2-1/2" outlet. The only problem is I cannot locate a right side curved manifold with a 2-1/2" diamter outlet.

I am going to call Summit tomorrow and see what they say. Basically i cant see how this Hooker kit will ever fit any 67-72 truck lwb or swb since the pipe is too large to bolt hp to the manifolds and no aftermarket or oem rh manifold exists that is large enough. There is no mention of it not fitting the oem 2" manifolds.

Re: In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

As far as I know , they never made a factory 2.5 rams horn in the curved, or angled configuration ,,,, only straight down. I've heard of a few exhaust shops that can do a decent job of bending a very tight 90 degree bend to connect the straight dump manifolds. The straight dumps can be used if you set your motor back to the rear frame mount holes. I bought a set of these http://www.ebay.com/itm/310710831825...S:1123&vxp=mtr and will set the motor back to clear the cross member. This will be on a 72 C20 LWB truck.

Re: In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

Hi wideside72, I think there may be one stock possibility for you curved rh manifold is originally on a L79 1966 chevy II nova. This is the 350 hp 327 of fairly limited production. Underhood clearance issues pitches them rearward, as i remember correctly as i owned 3 67 nova's with 283. The L79 was 2 1/2 dump where the 283 was 2 or 2 1/4. I have stashed somewhere a nova times magazine titled how to spot a legit L79. Grumpy jenkins drag raced and should also have photos on the internet. If you can't find what you are looking for pm me and i can check with a friend of mine. He literally has a basement full of nova parts from the last 35 years. I say he has novacane on the brain. Good luck, Brian F.

20 years ago I swear Brezezinski (not sure of the spelling) made them as "cheater" manifolds for classes that required stock exhaust....used to advertise heavily in oval track magazines

I'm not trying to be smart here, but are you sure the flare is too big? I have stock rams horns (not sure if they're exactly 2" - I never measured them), but when I was bolting up my exhaust, I couldn't get the downpipe to fit between the manifold studs either.

I had to leave at least one manifold stud out, center up the downpipe to the manifold, then put the last stud in. The exhaust pipe is too big to fit between the studs when all three of them are screwed into the manifold.

I'm not sure this is what you were trying to say, but if it was, maybe this can solve your problem without searching for some exotic 2.5" angled-dump rams horn manifold. If the kit you bought was made for our trucks, I would think it should bolt up to the factory manifolds.

Good luck either way.

No such thing (OEM) as 2.5" swept back rams horns

Re: In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

You may have to take out two of the studs. I honestly don't recall.

But put in one stud, center up the exhaust pipe, then thread the other two studs in around it.

I hope it works out for you.

Re: In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

I had the same issue with a dual kit I got from LMC, I ended up buying the ram horns in the following link...love em and they look great. Had to modify the header pipes to fit straight down dumps...that was easy.

Re: In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

Hello everyone !! I'm dragging up an older thread in hopes of finding some information !!
I will thank you in advance for any help !!

I have a '72 C20 with the factory 402 and TH400,, I plan on swapping it out for a SBC and 700r4 trans. The truck has a good dual exhaust system on it that I want to keep.
Do I:
1. set the engine back and run the straight dump rams horn (aftermarket )?
2.leave the sbc in the correct location and run the factory angled rams horns ?
3.leave the engine in the factory SBC position , run the after market rams-horns and fabricate a pipe to clear the cross-member ?

Are there any of the later model manifolds that would be close to dumping in the same place as the BB manifolds ?

The engine will be very mild , 350cid ,270 comp cam , performer intake , 1406 edelbrock , HEI.

Thank you !! Have a great day !!
Tom

Don't reinvent the wheel.

Engine in stock location with stock or straight rams-horns and modify exhaust to fit is my suggestion.

X2

On a related note, i returned the kit to summit and bought one from lmc. I could not justify pulling the manifolds and pilling studs to get the exhaust to fit. The lmc kit bolted on fine once i realized that all of the parts labelled "right" were actually left and vice versa!

Re: In search of 2.5" rh curved ram horns manifold

I bought a set of straight dump corvette manafolds for my K20 (engine in the rear frame mount hole locations)and took my truck to a muffler place, he mounted them up then called me and said maybe he could do one side but not the other as the bends were too tight, i went and looked, i know it could be done if ya piece and weld the thing together but i guess he wasn't that good, so i relented and got a set of stock angled dumps installed. I would like to find the adapters mentioned above tho..

These are the manifolds that I got and the description of them !!

Here we have a Brand New set of Small Block Chevy Exhaust Manifolds. If you're looking for the power of headers, and the dependability of cast iron Look No Further! This manifold will give you looks and performance never before available in cast iron.

Specs
• Provides a tight-fit for steering and clearance issues
• Flows better than original Corvette manifolds
• Same performance as tube headers with classic ram horn styling
• Offers a distinctive look
• 2-1/4" collector uses standard reducers or tight tube extensions
• Includes stainless mounting hardware and gaskets

Note: The exhaust port size is square and large enough for most round port heads. It measures about 1-1/4" and should be sufficient for most small block cylinder heads. Variation in location of spark plugs on aftermarket heads makes it impossible to verify that this will fit all heads on the market, but it will clear most straight and angle plug heads.

Are you talking about the mandrel bent 45 degree pipes ? Most exhaust shops should be able to bend these,,, you can also find these at some parts houses .

Here is a link to the tight tubes mentioned in the description : http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Tight-...teel,1722.html

Do those manifolds work with the 2wd front crossmember?

"Do those manifolds work with the 2wd front cross member? "

I haven't had a chance to mock them up to see but my guess is that I am going to have to make some adaptors to angle them back ,, or set the engine back to clear the cross member.
