swapping a 250 for a 305 is a step in the wrong direction, you wont gain power or mileage

The brackets are different on 305 and 250 that hold the alternator, etc.

The fan and even the fan shroud is a different shape due to the size and configuration of the inline vs regular motor which would lead to overheating and insufficient cooling if used on a v8 setup in some driving situations.

The radiator will not be correct for the v8 which had different cooling requirements.

a/c lines and probably even condenser are different between 6 and 8 cylinder.

I could keep going, but, in short most of the parts will not interchange. If you really want to do this then plan on replacing most of what is under the hood and attaches to the engine since the 6 and 8 are different animals. Hopefully that 305 was complete carb to pan with all accessories or the small parts will nickle and dime you to death.

Re: inline 6 to 305 swap engine!!

If the 250 has a head with the integrated intake, then I would say it is a boat anchor, but if I was going to do the swap I would try and find an earlier 250 w/o the integrated intake and use that instead of the 305, you may even be able to trade someone the 305 for a good running early 250.

off the top of my head I think the only thing from your 250 that will fit your 305 is the alternator, all the brackets and even the power steering pump are different.

If you do decide to do the swap, parts for the 305 accessories should not be hard to find in a junkyard since the 305 and 350 accessories are more or less the same, but try and pull everything you need from the same truck, b/c mixing matching pulleys and accessories can lead to headaches you never even imagined. I would also pull the radiator and a/c pump and lines from the donor truck with a V8, along with the motor mounts.

this is a swap that has been done a million times, so it is not impossible, I think the main issue is going to be the a/c

Re: inline 6 to 305 swap engine!!

if you have A/C brackets for an inline 6..they are worth their weight in gold.

Re: inline 6 to 305 swap engine!!

I think that is true, most of the 6 cylinder trucks did not have A/C

I had a 82 C20 a while back and had no problem selling the A/C brackets to a guy that was adding A/C to his Chevy II with a 292
