1968 Wrecker Purchase - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My purchase from this weekend. This started by my wife wanting to get a 67-72 one ton flat bed. During our hunt I found this instead. It's not what I was looking for, but I couldn't pass it up for $1100. The windshield got busted out recently, but the body is very clean. It does run, but has been sitting for a few years and I think it needs the gas tank cleaned out.
Originally was a 292 6 cylinder that has been changed to a 350 V8. Has been upgraded to disc brakes and 14 bolt rearend. It does need 1 rear spring shackle as it wore completely thru due to lack of grease.

Me too! I am having to give up my 69 GMC Custom Camper because she doesn't like the looks of the heavy suspension the 8 1/2 ft bed.

WOW great find and great price too ,I wish I could find a set of those steps for my Flatbed as they only make them for 73 up now . I love the old tow trucks ,msybe one day I can get one.

Looks really decent. Hopefully there's no surprises under that repaint. Looks good with the wider rear. I was looking at doing that on the '71 wrecker I had. This is the first new wrecker brought onto the site since I sold mine last month. Kinda hard to take after welcoming all the new ones through the years. Have fun with it.

They never did make those running boards for pre-73s. I just used the '73+ ones. I recall cutting the length and welding the front piece back in. That may have only been due to cut out fender wells,though,because I did have a 4wd with running boards also

This is wrecker number 2. I also have a 72 Chevy Wrecker and the 1st wrecker I ever owned was a 67 with a Holmes 480, but that was in then early 90's.

It appears to be homemade, but it was done very well. It is similar to a Holmes 440.

I hated to see you sell yours. You had a clean wrecker. It was sad to see what the guy who bought it did.

Yeah,I didn't sell it to quite a few other guys when it became obvious they didn't appreciate it as a wrecker. This guy gave a song & dance about running it as it is. You hear about guys feeling ripped off after buying stuff they come to find they were deceived on. It probably sounds weird,but I feel that way about selling that thing. I guess what really kills me is I had a guy second in line who really wanted it. He owns a towing business and wanted to fix it up to set out front and just run around (cuz he loves tow trucks). He had a '50s one for sale because he decided to find one in better shape to start with,then saw mine. And...he was from down the road about an hour. I could have gone and seen it or helped him out with it. Might have made a new friend. Oh well...no sense cryin' about it.

I was thinking that rig looked homemade,Holmes-like,and very well done. It really looks tough with the wider rear

I'm redoing mine now, and i'd really like to find a better rearend with LSD.

The rearend appears to be a narrow model out of a cab & chassis model. I don't think it is any wider than an original dually rear axle.
