1966 c30 drivetrain in a c10 driveshaft issue

Need help, I am building a c10 using a c30 drivetrain. 292 with a 4 speed muncie, the trans has a 4 bolt flange (not really the problem), the center carrier is u shape and the chassis is set up for the smaller hanging circle one, the u-joints are larger than the c10 and will not bolt to the rear end. Anyone know of info, building on a budge and trying to keep cost down. Posted via Mobile Device

take both U joints to parts store they should be able to set you up with a joint that has two different size trunnions one that fits the shaft and the other will fit the rear end yoke as for the carrier bearing have the parts store pull both and see if the ID is the same on both .....the "U" one is better if you can change the mount

I would definitely keep the HD carrier bearing from the C30. All you need is either the original mounting plate on the trailing arm crossmember, or make your own to mount it.

IIRC the HD support bearing is 1.378"ID and the other type is 1.18". Another vote here to go with the HD style; I've had the OE 1/2 ton style fail for no real reason, and most parts stores don't seem to carry them in normal stock. As has been said, conversion u-joints are common and cheap, so that's no problem. (If you have trouble finding one locally just order one from a racing place and keep a spare in the truck)

Although I have to ask; isn't the C-30 driveshaft also too long? All the C-30's I've seen are 133"WB or more, 6" longer than a 10-20 LWB. (Not a big deal to shorten a driveshaft, but that would suck to get ready to put it together and realize it's too long, lol.)

Also, thumbs up for the 292/SM420 combo.

as stated shorten your d/shaft and use a conversion joint. if you are using a sm420 out of a c30. then it should have the emergency band on the back end of the trans. are you going to use it or hook up to the rear drum emergency.

Re: 1966 c30 drivetrain in a c10 driveshaft issue

I have yet to measure the c30 driveshaft, but I do know the c10 ds is too short and it has a slip in yoke on trans end. I too thought I might be easier using the c30 ds, modifiy center crossmember and finding a u-joint to fit the smaller diff end. I will try to fit the c30 ds today and see if it is too long. Thanks

then you had a 3 speed in there before which is longer than the 420. a c10 or c20 d/shaft that had a 420 and the same w/base should work in there

Ok looked at and the c30 ds is about 8in longer so its either cut it down and find a u-joint to fit and fab a crossmember for the bearing or find a truck with that option. Thanks for the help
