Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
I'm trying to get proof whether front tow hooks were available with a chrome front bumper on K5's. I have one example SPID of a Cheyenne pickup with factory hooks - would like to see a K5 SPID similarly equipped. Thanks, Pete

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
I'd love to find a pair of front tow hooks for my K5. Does anyone have a line on a reproduction set? I saw some originals in the classifieds today for nearly $400. That's too rich for my blood.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
I grabbed the 1970 Blazer info packet from the GM Heritage Center archive, as a spot check:
http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/docs..._Full-Size.pdf It specifically says front tow hooks are not available when the chromed front bumper or Custom sport truck is ordered. Feel free to check the other model years to see if it is consistent for '69 - '72 (but I would guess it would be). http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-h...tion-kits.html K

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
My CST had the front "Tow Hooks" when I purchased the truck from the original owner. They were also chromed "Tow Hooks" (72 only, extreme bend). He had swapped the glove box out for a chromed glove box door and lost the SPID so I have no proof, but I do have the tow hooks.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
Here's 69-72 style. Notice how there is a LH and a RH hook whereas the 72 style above both point in the same direction.

Are those tow hooks or horns? Those look huge.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
The pictures I posted above are of the same hook, I don't have a picture of them both together. If you look at my truck picture you can see they are pointing in opposite directions.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
Huh - I'd like to see a pic of the hooks together. All 1972-only (extreme bend) GM front hooks point in the same direction as shown on my K20:

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
Your right, I have not seen a set like mine (opposite bends). The only ones I see are the right bends.
That must look off, having the same hook on both sides. I'll pull them out tomorrow and take a couple of pictures. |

I agree - the RH/LH 69-72 style look better balanced....post pics when you can. Pete

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
Very interesting! Any pics side-by-side off the truck? Will you bend one of mine the opposite way I've got three sets here - all same bend - and every set I've seen pics of is similar

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
That is crazy, chrome and they bend opposite directions. They must have had those custom made, I wonder how much that cost? It would be neat to see a build thread on the hooks.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
I believe some fire engines were outfitted with chrome hooks - maybe these are an example? IIRC none of my 72-only hooks have part #'s though I believe some did. Any numbers on the chrome hooks?

I'll look tomorrow with some side by side shot's. I'll have to check out the fire engine thought.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
I've never heard of factory chromed tow hooks, and since the glove box door of the truck they came off of was chrome, I would think someone had them chromed at some point. But the first thing I think of when it comes to chromed hooks is hydrogen embrittlement, which would take some of the strength out of them.

Re: Anyone have a K5 with tow hooks listed on SPID? CST?
But that doesn't explain the LH/RH set. When I pulled these off of the truck I took a close look at the mounting area on the front rails and these had definitely been installed on a new truck.
I'm leaning towards a government vehicle or fire engine hook set. I don't think these were chromed by the original owner. Just sayin....... |
