49 panel frame
I have a 49 panel that somebody put a 80's model full size frame under it. It doesn't come close to looking right. Is the panel truck frames the same as the truck frames or are they model specific? Would a s-10 frame work or is there something else that would work? Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 49 panel frame
Showme49, mine is setting on a stretched g body frame ( Malibu). I trimmed the rear rails after the coil spring pocket and made them out of 2x4 box. Mine does not have a flat floor in it though.

Re: 49 panel frame
Ok Thanks Shannon. I was wondering if a car frame would be better or not.

Re: 49 panel frame
Panel and truck are the same , but the panel and burb have 2 extra body mounts. S10 will also work. Follow some S10 build threads on here and add the extra mounts as needed.

Re: 49 panel frame
The nice thing with the g body frame is that the track width is right. There is no spacers on the wheels. The down side to it is that they are wide at the front of the rocker panels. When I did mine I made my own rockers. I pushed them out on the body a little further and then notched the doors at the bottom to correct it. The s10 frames are narrower, and you will need spacers up front and change the rear end to get the wheels out. I have done some on s10 frames and would do it again. Hope that helps.

Re: 49 panel frame
I'm doing a 49 pickup right now on a s-10 frame. I bought the panel for the hood but it is growing on me and I would like to fix it up. I thought about using a ad pickup frame but didn't know if it would work or not. Thought I might go the mustang 2 frontend but I don't know I am kinda a purist is the wheel base the same as the longbed s-10?

Re: 49 panel frame
showme49, You will have to post pictures of each, we love pictures. I believe the AD frame will work for the panel, but the panel I think has 2 more mounts. I also think that the long wheel base standard cab S10 is really close to the panel/truck wheel base. I am sure someone will chime in on that. I do not know off hand, but I think they are with in an inch.

Re: 49 panel frame
Long wheelbase standard cab S10 is 117 inches. If the 49 is a 3100 it is 116 inches. Check out this link for additional possibilities. http://www.oldride.com/library/1949_chevrolet_3100.html
Just throwing that out there cuz I know little about the panels as to whether or not they came in 3100, 3200, 3600 etc. This link also helps you decipher your vin tag so you will know just what you have Hope this helps. I was going to respond the other day and say that an AD pickup frame would probably fit if you were wanting to keep it original or go with a Mustang II type front end. I would think the S10 option will make it necessary to raise the floor toward the back. There are some car frames that have been used on this forum that might work better without raising the floor.

Re: 49 panel frame
The AD pickup frame works fine but you do have to come up with (make) the mounts that Newfisher mentioned. Not as much trouble a making Mounts to fit the S-10 frame though and that isn't very hard in it's self.
The S-10 just like the pickup is a process of making mounts and maybe getting the frame horns to clear the frame rails over the rear axle. Thanks for that tidbit Xpickup, I was pondering setting one of my cabs on a G body frame and setting it low with no runningboards and a shortened bed. That may not be as easy of a project as I had thought it could be.

Re: 49 panel frame
Pics of the suburban/panel truck specific mounts. Holes are already in the frame of a truck for these since they used the same frames, just added the brackets.
IIRC they used the same bracket for left/right. Not horrible to find if you need them, but you likely won't find them overnight. Simple enough to fabricate though. |

Re: 49 panel frame
If you still have access to those you might draw up diagrams of them and post them for him. They look a lot simpler to make than hunt down.

Re: 49 panel frame
Give me a week or so and I see what I can come up with a pattern to post up.
FYI that if you look for the brackets the small ones on are on 1/2-1ton chassis's, the large ones are only on 1/2 tons. |
