Hi! Last Tuesday I became the proud (and slightly nervous) owner of a 1966 C10. I like to think and tell my friends that at 15 I know a large amount of information on cars (this is a lie). It does run, bur it needs a new starter and rewiring, along with a lot of welding and new boards. It's got a 3 speed conversion and a 250 I6, with a possible 3/4 ton rear. Oh, and it's a 2WD.



Any ideas about the bed being out of line with the cab? I thought maybe a bracket was broken.



Dash has the idiot lights on it, but I have replacement ones that have more accurate gauges.

The wiring for this thing is insane. in the interior picture you can see wires wrapping around the driver's A-Pillar going to the engine.

I plan to keep it pretty much stock, with the exception of the sound system/ radio (it has nothing but a delete plate). Anyone know of a record player that can fit in this thing? Nah, I'm kidding. but I don't want to cut up the dash, so a radio that can fit in the original slot would be a welcome suggestion. I'm not really a fan of subwoofers, but something that you can hear Fortunate Son doing 75 on the highway.

What it currently lacks: Good starter, air filter, normal wiring, radio/speakers, 4 standard tires (I think they're supposed to be 15"?), brakes and brake lines,

What it has: Potential. Rust.

Welcome! I think you are in the PERFECT place to get advice and learn a ton about these trucks. Read a lot. First thing to do is visit the FAQ section and go to the 2nd post where it has links to find answers to almost any question you have. It sounds like you have a great start to an awesome truck. That is so funny and so honest at the same time. I love it. I am 50 years old and I still don't know much about cars relative to most of the guys here but I sure as heck have learned a lot in a short time here. Good luck with your project!

Welcome to the forum. It's always a pleasure to see another young person having enthusiasm for these old trucks. There is a ton of information available here, but if you don't find what you need just ask. There are plenty of experienced members willing to help. The Buick wheels look great and aren't often seen on these trucks. It would be interesting to know if the wheels are mounted on adapters, or if someone has already converted to the later 5x5 bolt pattern and perhaps disc brakes in front.

Welcome to the forum! You say it needs new boards in the bed. If the boards are completely missing in the front of the bed, the bed will drop down causing the misalignment. The picture from the right front 3/4 view looks like the right amount for missing wood. My '66 C10 looked exactly the same with no bed wood. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks for all the responses! I've learned stuff I didn't know a week ago, and I'm working on it whenever I've got time. Actually, does anyone know where to get the shop manuals? I know you need the 1963 manual and the 1966 supplement, but I'm kinda nervous sending off for one that may or may not have blurred pages or missing sections, so do you guys know of a good place to get the manuals?

If I am thinking of the right manual. Classic Parts of America sells them or The Truck Shop, or LMC and Jim Carter Truck Parts also sells manuals.

Well I got the bad news from RJR radiator shop today. it would cost around $500 dollars to recore (is that the right term?) the radiator by RJR, $400 for a new one, buuuuuut a new one from NAPA was $330. Including shipping. I also got the shop manuals yesterday and have been studying them like I have exams next week over a 1966 Chevy. Anyone know the front 5 lug wheel sizes? I can't seem to find those.
Other good news: I have brakes.
Bad news: They don't work.
Also did a little improvised choke and accelerator clip until I can find the real things (suggestions, anyone? No? Okay then).
The pink rubber band is what currently holds the two parts of the accelerator linkage together.
about the bed: based on what bonacker said, the wood in that corner is indeed broken, so would it be possible to weld a temporary panel (the sides are really rusted, the angled piece that holds the bed up is gone in 80% of the bed) that supports the bed on a new piece of wood?

Your 66 came with 6 lug wheels all around, so the FSM will not talk about anything 5 lug. Someone did a conversion. That's not a bad thing as long as they did a good job.

You can find used parts for your truck in the for sale section on this forum. It might help you stay in budget. You may only sell if you are a premium member.

See if you find out the actual name of the part you need. I realize that you don't have a photograph of the part, but anything from the manual that helps people know what you are talking about is helpful.

Brakes are not that bad to redo. Just make sure you get it done properly so you are safe.

Good luck. I might have the linkage parts you need. Just keep working on Start, Steer and Stop.

Check Autozone or Advance for your radiator- should be about $200 or so.

take the ball stud off of the carb. and the short piece below that to NAPA and they should be able to hook you up pun intended the stud and link are wore out

If you haven't gotten one already, someone else mentioned getting the radiator from Advance. If they have what you need, you can try to order online & use discount codes. Just go to retailmenot.com to find codes; should save you some $$$ for either the radiator or future purchases.

When I was 14, my BIL gave me a dead Dodge DeSoto. The only thing I didn't take apart and put back together was the automatic transmission. I learned a lot about how things worked and never looked at a book.

About the time I got a car that ran and a DL, my best friend's Dad owned a Junk Yard. I learned a lot more.

Of course, none of that learning does me much good these days, computers and all. But, I can still diagnose and fix anything that doesn't have a computer.

On your new acquisition, make a list of the top 10 things that need fixing. Go down the list and when you get to #8, start a new list. You'll be driving a nice truck before you know it (not casting aspersions just presenting a plan).

Welcome to the forum jbx66, I believe your front lug pattering is 5x5, if those are the b-body Buick rims from the early 70's. They may also have come in the smaller size 5/4-3/4..

since it's dark, I just tested the electrical system. I didn't know that the dashboard had a light! It's pretty cool. So excluding the taillights and back up lights (which are all either broken or missing) exactly one exterior light works: The driver's side turn signal. Well, the headlights might work, but I can't get the engine to start. Does the engine need to be running while the lights are on?

No the engine does not have to be running for the lights to work. Another handy book would be the operators manual. Has the basics on how the truck should function.

Ask away, but post more pics. We can sometimes solve issues by viewing how things are and knowing how their supposed to be.

Check out E bay for a radiator also. Most of the guys here use Champion but I think I am going to lean towards the 2 row radiators with 1" cooling tubes. Kind of like this one. http://www.speedcooling.com/1963_196..._Radiator.html
