Head in the clouds, seat problem, help?

hello everyone. i have a problem that you all might help me with.
i just had my factory seat for my 1972 cheyenne re-done, down to the frame, both new seat foams, cover, and when i installed the seat i found that when i get in my head is aprox 1" from the roof and the steering is 1" from my (beer belly). and im only 5'11" in height. i didnt notice this problem before but im sure the original seat after 45 yrs had sagged. anyway i cant drive this truck that way.whats a good fix? i have collasped the steering column to solve some of my "too close to the wheel" problems.
but still have the height problem. H E L P !

***and has anyone else ran into this problem?
poss fix....
*-- does any othe year (1967-71) seat sit lower?
*-- can i cut down the brackets?

Re: Head in the clouds, seat problem, help?

Can't believe your seat was stock to begin with if you are 5'11. I am 6'3 and head room is fine. But in answer to your question your best bet is to pull the seat and mod your brackets to lower the seat. But you can only lower until it rides the floor tunnel rise. Might pull the seat you have and post a pic maybe someone swapped the seat brackets on you at some point and you can hunt some stock brackets for your seat??

Re: Head in the clouds, seat problem, help?

. . . .

The same thing happened to me after my seat was "redone" ten years ago.

That new seat is very FIRM.

That old foam must have been at least an inch and a half lower !!!

My arm can't even reach the armrest anymore, it's too low !!! LOL

I just bought an original type cloth and vinyl seat cover and I'm going to have it redone again this winter.
( this time, the foam is going to be a little lower )

. . . .

i've got about 3"-4" clearence at tunnel. looks like the rear of the bracket has about 1" and front has about 3" so not sure on cutting down witout loosing the angle. im wondering if you have 67-68-69 seat. maybe lower?

I built custom brackets. Lowered my seat 3". I never liked sitting that high up, felt like I was driving a tractor.

I'll be getting my seat recovered before too long and never considered this....
Being 6-6" myself, this is something to think about too! I can't imagine losing MORE space in this little cab....

I know exactly what to do. Is it black or parchment? If so, I will trade you for my seat which has the sensation of setting on a bean bag.

Re: Head in the clouds, seat problem, help?

My mind tells me the foam is too thick. Was it store bought pre-made foam or did the shop "make" it? The only thing that doesn't add up with this is if the foam is thicker than OEM then how would the "made to fit OEM style" seat cover fit? Those cheapo LMC Cheyenne covers don't even fit over old foam right...been there/done that

i did notice that the jute under the carpet is taking up about 3/4 of an inch. the back of the seat is about 1" higher than the bottom of the back window.
so im thinking i can drop about 3/4" if i cut out the jute under the carpet.

Re: Head in the clouds, seat problem, help?

You are not the only driver with headroom and legroom challenges.

I am 6' 6" tall and my head nearly hits the roof on both my '69 GMC 1500 and my '70 CST. I am glad the CST doesn't have the extra tinting at the top of the windshield so I can see the road. (The GMC has the tinting and I have to adjust for that when I drive.)

The GMC is the bare bones model without any roof liner so I get a bit more head room in that truck.

Both trucks have the original stock seats in them and both seats are in like new condition.

Both trucks list "Full Foam" on their SPIDs. Maybe the non full foam seats had more span to their headroom and legroom.

I am more careful than most when I hit a bump in the road.

I am interested in lowering my seats somehow. I will look into adjusting the seat brackets.

Do you have any photos of how you cut down the brackets? I think this is my next step.
