I used to in my 81, before I knew a bit about the restoration hobby. All I can say is: Don't do it.

Just my humble opinion though, some people probably think it looks great.

I have a carpeted overlay on mine. I think.it looks fine. it was a nice $25 fix for my shot dash pad. I think a nice dash pad looks better, but until I come up on a nice blue dash pad, I'll keep the carpet.

Yes I've done it and it did come out looking good. The trick is to use thin carpeting. I'll try to dig some photos.

My brother has one on his burban. I was skeptical at first but his looks great. If the pad is toast it won't hurt it to stick velcrow to it.

I think I paid $25 from someone selling it here. Held on with some velcro. Made a huge improvement. Went from this...

To this...

Even over a decade later GM still hadn't learned their lesson with interior materials. My buddy's 99 Cavalier had quite the cracked dash. Same cause. I wonder if they've finally learned.

Re: anyone got carpet covered dashes? pics?

Mine is old and color faded, but it keeps the dash covered. Attached with little sticky back velcro tabs that are now coming loose. If I roll with the windows down, it starts flopping in the wind, especially with the wing vents open. You can't see it in this picture, but I have a tennis ball wedged between the defroster vent and the windshield on the passenger side to keep it in place for now
