Master cylinder install in an AD frame
Looking pictures of brake master cylinder in a 53 AD frame. I have a 79 Camaro front end with disc brakes on the front and a 94 3:08 posi with disc brakes in the rear. I bought a new brake master to replace the original on the frame. I would appreciate any measurements and tips for the installation. Thank you in advance.

Re: Master cylinder install in an AD frame
I don't have any measurements but when I want from single to dual master cylinder I fabricated a bracket that bolted to the original two holes in the bracket off the frame that the original master cylinder bolted to.
It consists of the rectangular plate that bolts to the bracket, a piece that the master cylinder bolts to that has holes for the bolts and a hole for the pushrod and dust cover to slip through that is welded on the long piece and a gusset to strengthen it. We made a heavy duty push rod for it that is adjustable. The master cylinder sits further back on the frame than the stock one so the pushrod has to be longer. It is set up so there is a pretty straight shot from the pedal to the master cylinder. You want the new master cylinder centered on the arm off the brake pedal that pushes the push rod so you have as straight of a push as you can get.

Re: Master cylinder install in an AD frame
I hate to drag folks off this board to another, but I was just researching the same topic and found this excellent article on Stovebolt.com:
http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/ma...der/index.html The brackets can be purchased. Does anyone know of a thread about installing a power booster on an AD truck? I've tried all the search functions on this site (native and Google) and having trouble finding one. |

That is a pretty slick bracket and slick setup. If a guy has an extra 100 bucks to spend and didn't already have the pedals and pedal bracket that might be the way to go.

Re: Master cylinder install in an AD frame
Here's what we ended up doing on mine. Sorry, these pictures aren't the very best, but I think you can get the idea. We ended up mounting the MC and booster on the outside of the (stock) frame and running a linkage through the frame for the brake pedal. Did this so there would be plenty of room for the headers and exhaust to come through - was really very tight with the MC inside the frame.
Here you can see the linkage through the frame to the right of the front suspension. Gives you an idea where this is located on the truck: Closeup of the linkage and the mounting plate for the booster: Here's the whole assembly, hiding under the cab, outside the frame, just behind the front running board bracket: Another view: You can see the linkage here again, running over the driver's side header. Also how nice it is to have the extra room for the exhaust to come through: |

Crafty indeed, Nice work Torchlight and great thinking out of the box to make things work and still keep them fairly simple.

I can't take any credit other than saying "yes" when the guys at the shop floated the idea to me. They are really good at what they do!

Re: Master cylinder install in an AD frame
i haven't been able to find the picture since, but someone cut the back half off their mc and gutted the mc.
then he attached a heim joint and a rod to the pedal assembly to a relocated mc, further back on the frame. i thought it was a brilliant idea, one of those ''wish i had thought of that''

Re: Master cylinder install in an AD frame
Thank you all for the great ideas and pictures. I found a three part YouTube on the installation of a master cylinder in. A 1953 Chevrolet truck. It has great pictures and narration. I am sure everyone would enjoy more ideas and pictures. Keep building and sharing ideas.
