1997 1500 with 40000 miles...

My Dad (72 years old) is looking at a 1997 regular cab 1500 5.7, auto, pdl, pw, that has been garaged since new. The owner is a 89 year old lady whos husband died several years ago, it was his truck.

She drives the truck weekly (like a 5 mile round trip to the dump) and has anything that needs fixing she has fixed right away.

My Dad called me asking what to offer the lady...I gave him the NADA value but what is a truck like that worth?

Dad said the truck is red and looks "showroom".

Thanks for your thoughts.

Ouch thats a tough one right there. Do you have any pics of the truck off hand that your dad has?

Is it a 4x4 also? Silverado package?

Re: 1997 1500 with 40000 miles...

If it's in that good of shape, $5K. But I'd offer $4K.
First thing I'd do is add a quart of tranny fluid to the oil and let it run at high idle for about 20 minutes, then do an oil change. The "little old lady" cars tend to be sludged up since they rarely get up to operating temperature and don't burn off the condensation.
I'm building a '96 shortwide, thinking of running vortec heads on a 406 shortblock I have.

You know what I know...other than its 2wd. I have no pics.

I checked NADA and gave Dad those numbers then told him to adjust from there depending on how much he liked the truck.

Dad keeps a car a LONG time so if he pays a little high its ok...he is replacing a 1983 S-10 with like 200K miles...he said he would also get rid of his 1997 Intrepid with 325K miles if he got this truck.

Thanks for the input.

Re: 1997 1500 with 40000 miles...

Dad called and said the lady let him take the truck for the afternoon yesterday...once he put air in the tires it drove great, he put about 15-20 miles on it with no problems...everything worked as it should.

If he gets it I will get him to send me some pics so yall can see it.

Sounds like an awesome find to me! Hope he's able to get it, & I look forward to pics if he does. My '97 Tahoe was well taken care of with 71k on the odometer when I got it, so I would imagine that truck is really clean @ 40k miles!

I've been wanting to find one like that. These trucks are long lasting trucks and I'd pay good money for the right clean well-kept low-mile one way before buying a new one.

A shortie to boot , looks like Dad scored big time. Up here in the great white north that truck would go for 7/8000.00

Super nice looking truck.

With that low mileage make sure your dad watches for water in oil. The stock intake manifold gaskets were crap on these years, and tended to leak. Other than that they are super good trucks!
