Question Are Flowmaster 40's To Loud???

I have a 70 chevy with a 350 it has a cam intake heads and about 350 hp. I was wondering if I put flowmaster 40's on it with headers and had them come out in front of the tires through the fenders, is that going to be to loud???? Also what size should the exhaust be? The guy at the exhaust shop said the best size would be 2 1/4 Does that sound right to you guys? Oh yeah one more thing where would be the best place to buy flowmasters from? Or do any of you guys have any used flowmaster 40's lying around that you want to sell?

Ps. I am also only 17 and have a part time job and trying to do this with out spending allot of money.

It depends on your definition of loud. I'm 22 and listen to loud heavy metal and punk music all the time, and I'd have to say that with headers, Flowmaster 40's dumping in front of the tires would be too loud, yes. Ever considered any other brand of mufflers? I too was all set on getting Flowmasters, but then one day something happened and that hollow metallic sound really started getting on my nerves. So thanks to this fine board, I discovered Magnaflows. Nice, low, mellow rumble while cruising, but they light up when you stomp on it! They actually flow better than Flowmasters because of the straight-through design. I don't know, I would consider looking into those though. If you do go with the 40's, at least consider having them exit behind the rear tires, or possibly straight out the back. That should help with the sound a little bit. Also, if you ever want to listen to music in your truck, have a conversation in the cab without constantly having to yell, or just want to drive for an hour or so without getting a headache from all the resonation, then you would have to have them exit behind the tires in some fashion

Well mine are coming off in a day or so. I have to shut my truck off at McDonalds to order at the drive up. Thats not why I am taking them off. I don't like the sound of them at all and I'm going back to my Supertraps. I have rebuilt them. Actually the Supertraps are quieter at an idle but are louder going down the road. I like the Traps much better.... As far a selling these, you would be better off buying new from Summit or Jegs I would guess.

i think in the flowmaster catalog they recommend going with 2.5 inch up to 450 hp. I want to go withthe same set up on my 68 when the time comes. Im gonna be running a 425 hp small block witha 284 2h cam and performer rpm heads and headers

I have 40 series exiting in front of the tire with headers and all that and it is loud. After a long trip my head rings for awhile too. I'd agree that after awhile I don't really like the flowmaster sound. I've heard good things about hooker aerochamber mufflers too and also summit turbo mufflers as a cheaper alternative.

I may put in an x-pipe which will mellow out the sound and will also give me an increase in power. I would recommend you run an x-pipe (an H pipe will work too, but not as good) on any dual exhaust system.

I've heard some really good sounding mufflers at cruises I go to. Just gonna have to start asking what they are running. One thing about flows........your neighbors wont know if its you or the guy down the block starting his truck as everyone seems to be running Flowmasters these days. Another reason I have the traps. Noones truck around here sounds like mine..............

i have a summit turbo muffler on a 3 inch cat back on my ford. it is louder than stock, but it;s only a 300 6. the summit turbos seem to resonate a lot. i an thinking of switching to a magnaflow. that it what i want for the gmc.

I run 40's through 2 1/2" pipe and an x-pipe that dump straight down right in front of the rear axle. I don't have any problems going down the road with the droning but I do have to shut down at the drive-thru's. I don'tr really like the sound all that much but the X-pipe helped a bunch-it's a completely different sound.

I have 30 series Flowmasters on my Chevelle with 2 1/2" pipe. I am 21 and for me, the louder the better, although my girlfriend has a different outlook.
Anyways, as far as pipe diameter, go with 2 1/2", you don't need anything bigger and smaller is close to too small.
The Flow's on mine are nice but they do have a sound that tends to get on your nerves after a bit. I am thinking about trying Magnaflows for the truck when I put exhaust on.

I put hooker areo chambers on our 68 with 355, they sound very good, and much quieter than my boy's 71 (406 with vortec heads)with Flowmasters (delta 40's)and cheaper too.

MAGNAFLOW'S and 2.5 pipe
screw those FLOWBLOCKERS , I had one come apart inside and block the exhaust exit and choked out the engine. Took em off everything and threw them away.

i had 40's on my s-10 blazer. the interior noise was deafening. trying to talk to the passengers in the back was a chore. so, i'd say, for an enclosure like the little blazers, it is too loud. for something like the cab of truck, should be fine

How much are the Magnaflows? I am running 3 chamber Flowsuckers and I hate them! I want a more mellow deep tone than the metallic sounding Flowcrappers I have now. I paid about 60 bucks apiece for these and would like to get some better sounding mufflers.

I run 2.5" pipe, H pipe and 40 flows dumped right before the rear axle and its great. The low pitch rumble they give off is just what I like to hear... of course hearing the cam is fun too

I've run tail pipes out the sides and hated it (too quite) so I cut them back off.

Don't get me wrong, I dont like the loud open pipe stuff its just too obnoxious but the flowmasters resonating under the bed like that give off a low rumble that will set car alarms off rolling through a parking lot. I love it!

it depends on what you call loud. i have full length hedman headers and 2.5 inch pipes with 40 series and i wouldn't trade them for anything. the note is very aggessive. you definitely won't be able to sneak through the neighborhood at midnight.

I have 40 series on my black pickup, headman headers, and 2 1/2" pipe. Exites right before rear tires. Sounds really nice. Nice idle and great rumble. I've had them about 2 years now and have no complaints. Sound great and flow really nice.

I have the 3 chamber delta-flows (50 series) on my 69 and 67. I love the sound and I can stil listen to the radio and cruise for 6 houres on the highway with no problems

40s flows are too loud poked out the sides in front of the tires(tryed that). for a nice sound, you might try a set of dynomax superturbos, with 2 1/4 or 2 1/2" pipe, H pipe & a set of 3x16" chrome cans poked out the sides ahead of the wheels. Good luck,crazyL

I have a Flowmaster cat-back 40 series on my 95 K1500. Pipes are all 2.5 inch. Exit at a 45% angle under the bumper. They are louder than I expected, or wanted, but I kind of got used to them. Conversation levels are a little higher, and also the radio volume. They do "bark" quite nice when you stick your foot in it!The stock muffler lost the complete back plate from rust, and I drove it that way for a month before i got the Flow system. A week after I installed it, my wife rode with me, and wanted to know when I was going to put the new exhaust system on!!! Gives you an idea what they sound like. I would do more checking around before buying the Flow system, if I had it to do over, but I will live with it now. Got mine through Summit. Good price, and two day delivery...free!! Part of the reason I have it.

Magna flow are sweet. I changed out my gibson for the magnaflow with a turndown, and I love it!.

I guess I'm old fashioned but a nice tone that you can still here is what I have with 50 series behind the rear wheel with 2.5' and headman ceramic headers....works for me and i don't have to shut it off to grab some drive thru..

I have 40 series Flowmasters on my truck, but they are Delta Flows. I would highly reccomend getting Delta Flows over the standard 40 series Flowmaster. Instead of being tinny and aggressive like the original Flows, the sound is more mellow, deep, and still agressive. Plus not every 5.0 rust-stang has them.

I have 1-5/8" Heddman headers, 2.5" pipe, and the 40 Series Delta Flow mufflers on my truck. My exhaust goes back straight from the headers, then turns up and the mufflers are mounted above and slightly infront of my rear axle. It is pretty damn loud....sounds GREAT though. I turn heads everywhere i go when i start the truck up, or give it a bit of gas. Most people look suprised to see such a muscular sound coming from a mustard yellow farm truck . I recently took a 4 hr. trip down the interstate in it, and my ears did hurt a little bit when i was done.

Also, i don't run any turndowns, tailpipes, or anything on my Flows. They just end, only with the 2" of pipe factory installed on the muffler coming out. I had turndowns on it for a long time, and the sound was still pretty deep, but much, much quieter, and more of a flutter at some RPM's. Removing the turndowns was one of the best things i did to the trucks. Sounded twice as loud, and twice as good . BTW, i'm only 19 so loud is still good....
