Power disc brake upgrade

I have a question for those of you that made the leap and did the power front disc brake set up on your 55-59's. How does it stop and how does the pressure on the pedal feel?
I've already done the swap and have put almost 100 miles on the truck, but it feels like my 72 C/10 did with manual front disc brakes. It stops really nice but you still need to apply quite a bit of pressure to the pedal.
Is it supposed to have that much resistance? I was under the assumption that the pedal would be a bit touchy like modern power disc brake set ups.

Re: Power disc brake upgrade

7'' vac booster under floor?
first bleed the brakes again, may be some air in the system.
sometimes it takes a few miles to bump all the air out.
my research indicated that is the 7'' booster was a marginal upgrade over no power.
modern trucks like my 09 sierra have a 12'' or bigger booster.
thus i went to the hydroboost.

Re: Power disc brake upgrade

If you are referring to the CPP setup, I have it and love it. My truck stops great and takes very little pedal pressure. That is one of the upgrades that I made that I'm happy with. Have you checked your vacuum at the booster? When I first set mine up I used a vacuum outlet on top of the intake, but when I changed my Quadrajet carb I connected my booster to the correct port on the carb. This didn't make any difference to the brake feel but thought I'd mention it. If your booster is connected to the carb make sure it's the correct port. The latest Hot Rod mag has an article about this same problem, hard brake pedal pressure. Turned out the truck owner had timed the engine with the vacuum advance hose connected which resulted in the initial timing being about 10 degrees retarded, which caused low vacuum. Just throwing out all possibilities.

Forgot to mention, IIRC my CPP kit came with an 8 inch dual diaphram booster.

Re: Power disc brake upgrade

yeah it's the CPP kit. I'll have to try and re-bleed the system because mine still takes a good amount of leg strength to stop it. As far as the vacuum goes, I don't have any line hooked up to it. Guess I missed that step.

Re: Power disc brake upgrade

You mentioned that it stops really nice but had hard pedal so that doesn't sound like the brakes need bleeding. If you have a vacuum booster you definitely need vacuum going to it.

Correction: I was going from memory in my last post and said something that was incorrect. It was not my vacuum to the booster that I connected to my carb, my booster vacuum hose is still connected to full vacuum directly from the intake. It was the hose to the choke pull-off that I moved from the intake to a port on the carb.

Re: Power disc brake upgrade

I put a new Speedway.com 7" booster M/C combo and within a 100-miles the pedal had that "dead" feeling.
Got some good advice in this forum and added an inline charcoal filter in a position higher than the carb. Here is the NAPA instructions on it. This cured my brake pedal problems. Probably 1000-miles since I added the filter.
My buddy forgets his seatbelt sometimes and I can raise him out of the passenger seat by tapping the brakes.

No vacuum hooked up means now power brakes.Pedal will need lots of foot pressure. When you hook up the vacuum you will have power brakes. If your motor does not creat a lot of vacuum then you will get power to the brakes on first brake pedal push but the next push to the pedal there will be no power braking. If your motor does not creat a lot of vacuum then you can install a vacuum pump to get lots of vacuum to your power brake booster.
