Color of underside of hood?
I went to inspect the paint and body on my '70 GMC Sierra Grande yesterday, and noted that the underside of the hood was done in eggshell black, like much of the rest of the engine compartment.
I am reasonably certain it was black originally, but can't find a good photo. Does anyone know for certain what color the underside of the hood should be? Body color or black?

My 71 has original paint and it's black, with orange (body color) overspray around the front edge.

Black from factory. IMO body color looks better so I went with that.

Black with overspray. The amount of overspray varied.

yup, black w over-spray. I think the guy used a piece of cardboard and a spray gun like I do!

Well, there is a 67 that is body color, but looks like most are/were black.
My 72 is still the original paint on the underside of the hood and it is black.

That is the way I'm wanting to do mine but at the little car shows the judges will knock you big time for it. They usually want it to be all shiny or black. Dont ask how I know.
I was wanting to replicate the under coating on firewall like the dealer did,but they hit me hard on points.I ask about it and they said it looked like sheet.I tryed to explain but they didnt care to listen |

Screw the judges!
Build it how you want it, not them! Most of them don't have a clue what's factory and what isn't.

I thought when we looked into this previously we determined that different factories treated the under hood area differently--some painting it the body color and some the black w overspray. A judge worth his salt should know this. There is difference between fact and opinion...imo.

AFAIK Lou is correct. Some painted some not. Mine is a fremont truck and it is black with overspray. I think I'll search ... Inquiring minds wanna know

After doing a fair bit of research (I started the thread originally) it looks like they all were black with varying amounts of overspray. In my case I don't have any overspray now, but that's OK, it's not an NCRS truck.
I think the onus on anyone with a body-colored truck would be to prove it came that way; even an otherwise "original paint" truck could have have autobody repair to the hood. Unless we discover that one factory (there were several that built these) did it different than the others, I suppose.
