I ran across this on a mine I do work for. They tried to give it away to Boy Scouts of America but they have no title, and it has never been registered or licensed (always on a private mine) BSA declined and they don't know what to do with it.

What a cool project this might be.

so can you get a bill of sale and then register it in AZ?

That would make a nice parade rig.

Even though it doesn't have a "title" some entity owns it and has it on their inventory.
If it is though the federal govt usually they end up going though a GSA auction but local or state govts may have other options. If it belongs to a city or township you may just be able to make an offer in writing and be able to go that way.

Once you have a notarized bill of sale from the organization that owns it you can process that and get a title. It may have exempt plates on it that will show that it has never been titled but legally owned by that fire department.

The big rub might be if it has been handed down though different departments or divisions without any paperwork going with it. That is doubtful but it might have happened if it was considered too old to be concerned with and a bigger fire department handed it down to a smaller one.

Some states allow registration without a title for old vehicles. Companies will register your vehicle in one of these states then sell it back to you.

In this case I don't think one needs to go though one of those title washing outfits. Truth be known the trucks whole life from the day it left the factory and went to the firetruck factory is documented somewhere.
A lot of states are getting real wary of those title fabricating outfits anyhow and when a title from one of them shows up it gets red flagged.

That is EXACTLY what happened, not just the original mine ICCCO being bought by Cyprus, then Phelps Dodge then now FCX,, but it was handed over to a mine 80 miles away and in a different county. No one has any record of original purchase, ownership or anything. Because it was never operated on public streets, it was never registered, titled or licensed. Similar to a tractor or any other piece of equipment would be used entirely on private property and never seeing the public roadways.

Title would be a mess for sure IF I can even find a way to purchase it (at scrap price is the only way this entity can sell derelict equipment)

It would make a GREAT project but I'm starting to think it's not worth the $ or effort. I think I'll approach the local fire department and see if they want to mess with it as a parade toy. I heard it runs, just the pump is burned up.

Here you could go thru the bonded title process with a bill of sale. Basically the last known owner is contacted, legal notices placed and after a time period if no one step forward with a valid title its yours. If it was closer I'd consider it and wife would probably make me sleep in it. Too cool to be scrapped.

Bonded title in Az should not be problem. I got a bonded title on a 1960 IHC Westcoaster for about $360. It had been so long without registration there were no records of it in the system. I talked to the original owner, but never met him. And he had gave it to another cattleman. Long story short, it got a valid AZ title. BTW, I used one of those state sanctioned private agencies and stayed away from the DVM. Good luck and go for it! Are you down in the Miami/Globe area?

The legal bonded title process in Iowa is pretty easy too. Currently doing it with 2 old Willys Jeeps, basically you provide all the information, the DMV attempts to contact a previous owner, an inspector comes out and verifies serial # (or VIN), and you get the bond and a title. Bond lasts for 3 years and if anyone comes forward in those 3 years they get the bond and not the vehicle.

We have those up here too and the owner of the one I now use on a regular basis one of the sharpest car title people I have ever run across. You won't get anything even slightly bogus past him but if you are honest in what you are trying to do he knows what hoops need to be jumped through. He is also a half mile from the state patrol inspection station so his office sees a high number of paperwork from vehicles that have been inspected by the state patrol.

Thats slicker than monkey poop on a greased door knob. You know if you dont go get it you will always think about it. You could start a buisness doing birthday parties for kids with that beast. Every time i take my boys to car show and they see an old fire truck they go crazy.

Do it. I just bought one and am going through the bonded title process in Arkansas. Mine is a 1950 GMC 450 Boardman bodied fire truck. I drive it everyday just playing with it. Its missing all the firefighting equipment, lights and sirens. Just bought light from another board member. Bond process is pretty simple as stated. You should be able to pick that up cheap as no one wants it!!!!.
