1st Gen 350 chevy in 61 apache bracket questions
Were putting a 1st gen 350 chevy (with 64 327 heads please note this as there are no mounting holes on the front of the heads)in the 61. A few questions. Were going to add power steering, and I know that the pump is located low on the drivers side. Which side should the altenator be mounted on?
The motor was in the truck, with the altenator mounted high on the drivers side. On my 64 C20 with a 350 the altenator is on the passenger side?!? Thinking of heading to the local yard to see what kind of brackets I can come up with. These are easy enough to blast and re-paint. Plus I may find some misc parts for the power steering pump. Any help or pics are appreciated. Glenn

Re: 1st Gen 350 chevy in 61 apache bracket questions
All the trucks '72 and earlier with the V8's came from the factory with the short water pump. This would position both the alternator and power steering pump on the left (drivers) side. Since you are going to use the early heads without the accessory holes, that will be your simplest solution. It sounds like you already have the alternator brackets?

Re: 1st Gen 350 chevy in 61 apache bracket questions
Captain Fab.
Thanks,. I wasnt sure if it was possible to run both the alt and power steering pump on the left side. It would be easier to do if possible. I do have some brackets, but the previous owner was quite the hack. I have the long bracket (with curve) for the adjustment, but the lower bracket was a hacked up piece of angle. If you have any pics of a lower bracket and how it mounts to the engine it would be helpful. It may help me fine one online or at the local scrap yard. Thanks, Glenn

Are you running the original rams horn exhaust manifolds or headers?
Also the '68 and earlier cars came with short water pumps. So that is another source for the brackets and pulleys. If nothing else you can go with some aftermarket brackets and pulleys

Re: 1st Gen 350 chevy in 61 apache bracket questions
Hi There,
I have a lot of experience with this same situation and maybe my lessons can help you: But first, a few questions: 1. Are you using the horseshoe front motor mount? If so, the power steering pump will not fit on the drivers side unless you relieve a bit of the flange. I did that, and the pump fit just fine. My original motor did not have accessory holes so that is why you see the configuration I used. 2. With aftermarket parts so cheap these days, I converted from a short pump to the long pump, and then moved the alternator to the passenger side while adding power steering to the drivers side. I found a website that offers the brackets for the power steering pump so that you can hang it from the front of the pump. Without accessory holes, this is the only way you are going to do it unless you use brackets off of the exhaust manifolds. As you can see, I didn't do that. The aftermarket brackets are pretty easy to source and there is a lot of useful information on the web. Just take your time shimming the pump so that is aligns with the crank pully. This part is very time consuming...but doable. I don't think you are going to find what you are looking for at the wrecking yard given the addition of power steering. At least I didn't. As you can see, I did the long water pump (it was short before) as it made it easier to find brackets for the alternator on the passenger side plus I used the holes on the long water pump to mount the power steering pump brackets. My 1975 chevy truck was set up this way and I was familiar with teh layout. However, there is more than one way to skin this cat...so take your time figuring out which way to go. Finally, I'll include a pic to show you what I ended up doing. But be advised, this is the second engine I put in here and the first one did not have the accessory holes in the heads like yours. That's why I used these brackets and continue to do so. I am still not using any of the accessory holes in these new heads as I was too cheap to change! It's basically the same thing you are doing. Mine is a 61 apache like yours...I added the power steering and switched a few things around. I also ended up switching from the front motor mount to side mounts due to the harmonic balancer being too big to clear the front motor mount. I went with a 383 Stroker on the second engine and the harmonic balancer is much bigger. Whole nother challenger when that happens. Ask away if you have questions. Here to help...been there! Tom

Re: 1st Gen 350 chevy in 61 apache bracket questions
Par4Tom,
Thanks for the details. If I go to a long pump, then I will need new pulleys. Im running the same radiator. Looks like a champion. (Ours is a 4 core) I am going to add power steering. I am waiting for my perch mounts to arrive. I bought them from CPP but have been told they take forever to ship things out. To me it doesnt matter which side I add the altenator to, as long as it works. Thanks To all for the advice. Glenn
