Re: 71 chevy swb step side
Two thoughts,
1. If your DMV goes outside and checks it before you register it you are SOL. You are going to have to go to the DMV and have both VIN's ran through and apply for a new title/VIN. This can be a pain and if the seller doesnt want to help you, you may be in for a bad time. 2. If the DMV doesnt check it and it was titled in the same state, you may be fine, but then you will have to deal with it if you ever want to sell it. If you do get it in your name then you may be able to get a new title with a new VIN and all could be well. Always check frame, VIN, glovebox SPID and title before buying. If the SPID is readable, you will know if someone is trying to sell you a cutdown longbed as a shortbed. All depends on the DMV, could be painful, could be easy. Smitty

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
So, if I buy a cab without a title, what is the best course of action?

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
The title needs to match the door jam vin... if it doesn't, you have issues. The door jam vin is attached with 4 special rosette rivets to identify if any tampering has coccured. If the DMV thinks there has been tampering OR the paper title doesnt match the door jam the police will become involved and the truck may be impounded.
Whats the story from the person you purchased the truck? PS: If it's a Nevada title, they dont check the vin at the inspection station. If its an out of state title the will verify the door jam vin and sometimes check the frame vin. |

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
Thanks for your help. What if a person got a frame and found a cab somewhere then pieced a truck together? How would you go about getting a title?

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
Each state tends to follow their own rules. I would go to the DMV and talk to the inspectors, not the people at the window. I do know that for this era trucks, the door jam tag must match the vin on the title... the frame SN is a grey area and like I said... NV title and no one looks... Out of state title on a running drive clean looking truck, probably not going to check the frame. Multi colored panels and missing inner fenders or bed parts may flag the inspector to look more closely... Then again, go on a Monday and you get the third degree.. Go on a Friday and you get... ehhh, that good enough...

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
I live in Nevada , so I'm thinking I will buy a cab with NV title and use all the other parts from the truck I bought in CA. Then I will have a NV title for the cab and a CA title for the frame .Now what problems do I have? I also saw a web site that sells the special rivets ?

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
My door jamb plate had been removed yrs ago by the PO. When I went to DMV, the inspector said, "I can't find a VIN number on this thing". So I said, "oh, there's one inside the glovebox". He looked at it and passed me, you might get lucky like I did.

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
Any vehicle, 1967 and older is exempt from smog check in Clark County (I think Henderson is in Clark.) Any vehicle 1968 and newer still requires to be checked with an emissions test every year. Its just one less thing to worry about....

Re: 71 chevy swb step side
I called a guy in Vegas, Don at dons classic chevy parts .. He told me how to get my title , seems Nevada is a frame state , the vin tag on my truck magically disappeared? Took the truck to DMV .. Got lucky with a really nice inspector, he checked the frame , numbers matched. Then he installed a new vin plate..( blue tag) title to me is on the way.!!!
