Re: rear axle ratio
I run a 3:73 with 29.5" tire, I have a turbo 400 right now wtih a 3100 converter, and twist about 3000 at 60-65mph. I would base it on what you use the truck the most for, 3:73-3:90ish would probably work well.

Re: rear axle ratio
I had a 97 chevy c1500 xcab 350 vortec 4l60e with a 31" tire and 3.42 gear. I pulled a 16' car hauler with various 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks I parted out. It did ok, but 3.73 would have been better. I felt the limiting factor was the fact that it was a 1/2 ton. It was a clean truck but had 200k on the engine and 100k on trans sold the truck for $5500 and bought a 93 gmc k2500 x cab lwb with a blown 350 but good nv4500 5spd and 410 gears for $500.I dropped in another vortec i had with a tbi swap manifold. I felt better hauling with it. As for 67-72 trucks as luck would have it the three trucks i have swapped a 700r4 or 200 4r into either had a 3.73 already (original 6 cyl trucks) or i swapped a 3.73 i had into them. It would be my first choice. Actually, I have never come across a 3.42 rear gear in a 67-72. Always either a 3.07 or 3.73. Side note, i was happiest with the 200 4 r trans. The first gear is not as low andmless drop between first and second. All else being equal it seems to have a better low end than the truck with similar engine and 700r 4 trans.
