Need Help finding the truth

I bought what is to be a 1972 Super Cheyenne 3/4 2 wheel drive longbed..I have owned for about 3 weeks. Since i have bought i have found weird things with it..
1.. I have 1973 up big block brackets for the A/C and alternator and powersteering
2.. It is a '72 402 in it I checked the code
3.. the nice part i have a 700r4 in it
4.. it has been repainted white and orange from the original green and white..
5.. some one said I had a van tilt in it..How can I tell??
6..my interior was redone i found the receipts for about 700.00 for it all cloth seat and headliner with the chevy bowtie pressing out of it.. scrolled door panels..wood grain on the glove box but not on the instrument face..
7.. some body trim is screwed on.. I will say very nicely done, but someone told me that they could be that way or cliped on..
it has the box on the passengerside of bed BUT I NEED TO FIND A LOCK FOR IT..
8..Dana 60 rear with leafsprings and 3.54 gears..
9.. the only bondo or fiberglass i could find was in the cab corners and it seems to be very little amount..
and i was told the mirrors are after market is that true??
Besides all these things I fell I got a hell of a deal of the old guy selling it..
I paid $3200 for it
what do you guys think

Regardless of what has been done or changed on it, I'd say that you stole it for that price. I've never seen any truck that clean for less than $8,000

Awesome deal!

Those look like Ford mirrors to me. Maybe someone can verify this.

Not sure how to tell between a van tilt and a regular one, but does your option sheet say "comfortilt" or something like that? if it does, I would assume it's original. There are ways to tell if it's a van or truck tilt. Sure one of these guys can help.

Nice truck, steal of a price, who cares if it has some odd parts on it? You got into it right, that's for sure.

Looks like you got a good deal to me. As to your questions, you might try one or two at a time, and add some pics of what you have, or what is in question. You'll find the answers here faster than anywhere else.

I would say you got an excellant Steal deal!!!!!!!
Its True my 72 lower trim had Screws and clips
Those mirrors look to me Campler special or delux camper mirrors (stock i believe)(i see them alot on these)
I asked a friend and he believes the Van and truck tilt steering where the same for these years, they changed on the 71 and 72 where the same. In his opinion

Well You Got a Sweet ride there!!!!!!! and Welcome to the board

Smile

On the van tilt question, the van tilt has a longer steering shaft than the truck tilts. It sticks out of the column approximately 5"
vs 1 1/2" for the truck tilt.

6. The instrument cluster should have woodgrain on it to match the glovebox. Probably an aftermarket repo on there. The ashtray should have the woodgrain too.

7. The trim is clipped on except for the following: Front lower where it curves under the front bumper (2 screws) and the lower rear by rear bumper (2 screws). Screws elsewhere are incorrect.

8. This is correct rear/ratio for a BB 3/4 ton.

9. Mirrors are definately aftermarket. Ditch them immediately and get the correct ones. :p

Here are correct 72 BB brackets for alt and PS.

and from other side, showing short water pump and puleys. This is an OE 72 setup. The lower pulley is the correct 3 groove setup for a/c but this engine has a/c removed. Not needed in beautiful northern NH.

One other thing about your truck is that is has the FACTORY installed auxillary saddle tank. This is evidenced by the filler being high on the bed side with grommet and cap matching that of the in-cab filler. The dealer installed ones used a filler door cover cut thru bedside, between upper and lower trim

Come join the Fundamentalist Church Of CPNE if ye seeketh the truth! Here you will learn the gospel according to GM. We shall sing the old time gospel favorites such as "Like A Rock" and "See the USA in Your Chevrolet".

You will also be warned that what GM assembled, no man should put asunder! Brothers and sisters, ye shall be made awareth of these deadly sins:

1. Slamming
2. Chopping
3. Shaving
4. 17 inch or larger wheels
5. Seats from wrong years
6. One-piece door glass
7. Smoothed firewalls
8. Anything XXL is contemplating

And the #1 sin, dash cutting!

Note: The above is tongue in cheek humor not meant to offend anyone (especialy XXL):p

I would like to thank eveyone that replied. I did find out by looking harder at the steering shaft that it has been cut and rewelded together,I will guess it is a van tilt,But it works fine and looks good.
Unless someone from the board crashes a house party of mine then noone will ever know

Thanks CPNE for the great info about the brackets and trim..
I will be on the lookout for the right brackets for the motor.
We here in Spokane WA have an auto swapmeet coming up this weekend in july 11,12,13..i should find stuff there. I have my own booth for 3rd year in a row I have some 67-72 stuffwhich if it doesn't sell I will put a notice on here when I place them on ebay and 4x4 stuff and some '64-'67 Oldsmobile engine stuff.. and will look for the deals before anyone else gets in

By the way I was born and raised in Manchester NH, lived there for 19 years the Joined the US Air Force . My grandparents owned Chasse's Variety convenient store in Candia NH..
I have been in the USAF for almost 9 yrs..

Thanks everyone again for the great info and the compliments on my new classic

Anyone comes through Spokane feel free to stop by and say hi

I am now on the Righteous path of my fellow 67-72 brotheren

Ahhh, that is why the board name "drink2mny". What else is there to do in good old "ManchVegas"

Good luck with your truck. Remember, the path to stock righteousness is fraught with peril.
