Here is a substitute for the “hockey puck” (Round) clearance light lenses.

-
I don’t have a truck that uses these but I have this cab roof that I cut off of an old wrecker a few years ago that has them on it. I know the round lenses are hard to find so I always keep my eye out for them at the swap meets. I never find any, but every time I see the Harley turn signal lenses I have to take a closer look just to make sure. I saw a pair of the HD lenses at the swap meet last weekend for 50¢ each so I decided to buy them and see if they could be adapted to the truck roof.

They are a little smaller and the screw holes are a little too close together but they work with a couple of modifications.

Here is what I did:

First picture is the stock HD lense. Second picture is where you have to trim down the screw hole bosses on the bottom. The third picture shows the screw holes slotted. (slot so screws fit snug) You have to leave enough lip on the sides for the screw heads to rest on. I used screws with smaller heads than the stock ones but the heads still had to be ground down to fit down in the the recessed holes. I just used some old slotted screws I had on hand for the test fit, (fourth picture) but if you used new stainless screws they shouldn’t rust where you grind them down. Here you can see that the the lense is smaller than the rubber pad. You have a couple of choices on how to seal everything up. You can use a small rope chalking like I show in pictures five and six, (should be available in different colors at most hardware stores) or you can use a small amount of Silicone Sealant. I think the rope chaulk would make it easier if you ever had to change a bulb. Be sure and push some chaulking down around the screw heads to seal them up. Picture seven shows the before and after lenses.

When you tighten the screws be gentle so you don’t crack the plastic. It shouldn’t take much to hold them down.

For now, I just used stepside back up light lenses and put in amber bulbs. They fit perfectly but are of course clear.

Will have to do until a "cheap" set of originals come my way. LOL

Great idea and creativity here!

Without being right on top of them, I don't think anyone would notice they weren't original!

Re: Here is a substitute for the “hocky puck” (Round) clearance light lenses.

Nice tip. I have the amber dome lenses that came on my '90 FLST. I'm one shy of a set.

The reverse lenses can be tinted/painted amber/orange. Those aren't much easier to find, though. My friend built an Indian bobber and used the Indian head front fender lamp for his tail lamp. He sprayed the inside of the lens red.

Great idea, made in the U.S.A. and you can say it's a Harley Davidson Edition. If anyone doubts you, tell them to look at the lenses.Creative ideas like this are one of the main reasons I became a supporting board member 4yrs ago and check the board almost everyday.Awesome idea Leon and thank you for posting it...Mike.

Thanks guys. The thing about it is I see these all the time at the swap meets for a buck or two apiece.

Oh Crap!
I had a set of NOS cab lenses just sitting around and didn't know what to do with them. Then one day I noticed that with a little modification, they would fit on my Harley. So...I...
Sorry, I just had to do that.

I got 5 of the repro back up lenses from Classic parts. $3.95 each!

Might try the painting thing some day...

I would think it would have to be pretty thin paint or the light wouldn't show through....

Re: Here is a substitute for the “hocky puck” (Round) clearance light lenses.

I agree. That's why they are still clear. Someday I'll search around the net. Maybe there is something out there that will work or even designed for such a thing.

I can't remember the name of the paint but think it was called metalcast or ? It's a paint you spray over chrome. I used the red on some 1157 bulbs and it worked perfectly! It looked like an actual colored bulb you could buy. (at the time, I couldn't find any red bulbs to save my life around here!)

Maybe something like this would work....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tamiya-PS-43...item1e7fcb34ab

Or here is the Metalcast orange paint.

http://www.caswellplating.com/paints...zed-color.html

Caswell has a lot of neat stuff if you look around their web site....
