Sbc or bbc?
I have a 383(it's suppose to be) but it has ****ty 416 heads and performer intake on it. Well I wanted to buy some dart iron eagle heads and performer rpm or air gap intake so it will come alive. I could possible buy a fresh stock build 396 with a 427 cam. The motor has only been ran on the stand. I know the guy real well and he is a great guy and great mechanic. Buy the 396 or heads and cam? Truck is just a toy/daily. 200-4r 4.56s 29" tire

Its a toss up the small block you can keep your trans,But the big block would need a new trans. If you don't care about gas mileage get the big block.

Re: Sbc or bbc?
Stick with the smallblock. A 396 is the baby of big blocks and with decent heads, the 383 will smoke it. Biggest problem with the 396 is it's tiny bore - valves are too close to cylinder walls for decent breathing. If you're going to spend the coin on a big block, get a good 2-bolt 454 block, Scat cast crank and Scat rods, open chamber 781 or 049 heads, small dome pistons, and buy stock in a tire company, you'll need it.

Re: Sbc or bbc?
If you are at all concerned with gas mileage, then forget the 396, especially one that has been hopped up. If you don't care about gas mileage, I would rather have a stock 454 out of a truck. I have had two and have run them for decades with no engine work, except for replacing the notorious "soft cam" and resulting busted pushrods on the 73 I had. In a 1/2 ton pickup a stock truck 454 engine won't use much more gas than a 350, and it has way more power and acceleration.
