new guy
Hey ladies and gents,
First let me just say, I seriously don't care much for grammar and will often make mistakes so forgive me for not caring. I recently traded in my beloved 71 nova for what is probably the coolest project I've ever owned. She is nowhere close to being finished but has a great deal of work done to her and I'm proud to call her mine. I said my goodbyes to Steve's nova site and am looking to get heavily involved, at least from time to time, on this site. By involved I mean asking numerous questions, sometimes ridiculous, until I get the answer that works for me. Lol no, but seriously I'm excited to share my experiences and help others out too. Anyway, she's a 64 gmc swb with a gen1 383 roller/700-r4(not the th350 the p/o claimed)/9"ford. She is a blast to drive but I know there's room for improvement. Here's some pics, feel free to let me have it. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: new guy
Oh, and I forgot the most important part... It's my daily driver, just like my nova was, so this baby is getting run.

Re: new guy
Welcome to the forum & great looking truck. Looks like a lot of mods already done to the truck. I like the wheel tubs and looks like someone swapped the rear diff out. The cleaned-up tailgate looks cool, not something commonly seen. Keep us posted on the updates and future projects.

Welcome and that is a pretty lil swb ya have. From the pics that looks to be the original frame or at least what's correct for a 64.

Re: new guy
Welcome to the board!
Great looking truck. Your front suspension has been changed over to a 73-87 version.

Re: new guy
Welcome for NM!! Awesome GMC.. my '62 used to belong to my brother and he used to rock that same rear view mirror in the eighties... the holes are still there for it if I ever want to put it back in.
Good luck... she's a beauty...

Re: new guy
Thanks for all the comments guys. Ya, I never leave anything alone. I just like to make things better. Thanks for the frame and suspension comments. I want to redo the entire suspension starting with the back. My rear end is only leafs and air shocks. I think I need to start with a better jack tho. Then a new intake, and I might ditch the street avenger too, altho it running good. Lol. There is no sway bars on the truck or seat belts. And id like to convert the rear drums to disc which I would imagine would fix the extreme peddle pressure.
I love all your trucks too! There is a ton nice work on this forum. Posted via Mobile Device

Re: new guy
Welcome to the site! That is a very nicely finished truck. This is by far the most informative forum on the web for 60-66 GM trucks, especially for modified and hot rodded versions.
The mirror is indeed a Wink brand. I had one for years in my 46 Ford sedan. As a result I installed one in my truck when I first got it, but it worked much better in the car because it had so much more glass area than the pickup. Every now and then I’d find a cop hiding in my blind spot because they didn’t realize I could see them with that mirror! Fyi switching to rear discs won’t fix a hard pedal, it will make it worse. Drum brakes are self-energizing and discs are not, meaning disc brakes only apply force by linear pressure at the pedal. Bendix drum brakes operate on a cam action which forces the shoes geometrically harder into the drums with only minor pressure increase on the pedal. The advantages of discs compared to drums are that they continuing working when hot or severely wet. If you’re experiencing a hard pedal now there could be several reasons causing it: Your booster could be inoperative. The linkage isn’t installed correctly at the pedal. The proportioning valve is incorrect or not plumbed right. The master cylinder isn’t properly matched to the wheel cylinders or is the wrong type (disc/disc instead of disc/drum). Does the engine have a rough cam? That can really limit available vacuum for the brake booster, but I notice you have a brake vacuum canister on the inner fender. If connected correctly that should make up for low idle vacuum. When set up correctly discs in front and drums in the rear should result in pedal pressure similar to a new car. Before I retired I also used my truck for daily transportation. It’s a great way to maximize your enjoyment factor. Have fun!

Re: new guy
Welcome to the form
That's a nice truck. I don't think I have seen that paint scheme before. Your hard brake pedal could be caused by that small diameter brake booster. In my experience, they don't do much in the way of assisting the braking, especially with a low vacuum engine.

Welcome, & great looking ride! You're definitely in the right place, as this forum should be able to answer any questions you have about the truck. Good luck, & have fun.

Re: new guy
Welcome! I also have mine as a daily driver and it's not nearly as nice as yours!! If it makes you feel better, I have disk in front with a power assisted booster and drums in back and my 65 feels and stops just as good as my
2004 silverado with 4 wheel disks. I don't know much about it but I don't think it's related to having the rear brakes being drums. Either way, WELCOME!! Posted via Mobile Device |
