Orignal size
Can anyone tell me what the orignal size was for the screws for the 71/72 metal sport mirror backing plates? any help will be great.

The original screws that I have seen were chrome plated phillips head sheet metal screws #10 x 1" long.

NO they are not #10's, the screws with the backing plates are 1/4-20 and they have an undersized head on them.
And you just don't go down to the hardware store and get them.

This correct. The originals were stainless steel 14-20 X 7/8 GM part # 9419728.
