Wall St. Journal article about GM.

This was in the WSJ on Wednesday, 10/2/13, supposedly quoting a person who is a candidate to be CEO of GM when the current CEO retires. I though it was rather humorous.

Re: Wall St. Journal article about GM.

"Recently"? Maybe til the 1970's cars were designed to install almost any engine the marque had.

As for that part about, "...four holes were drilled..." that's just some know-nothing bullschit. This is what passes for "management" of an automotive company? She probably think motorcycles are just cars that they didn't install the other two wheels on! What an ignoramus.

Re: Wall St. Journal article about GM.

The person who was quoted in the article has 33 years with GM and is currently head of Global Product Development. I don't expect a CEO of a large corporation to know every minor detail of every job in the company, but I would hope the CEO of GM would know a little more about automobile manufacturing than the article would indicate.

Really? Maybe I can just bore a few extra cylinders in my block. Always wanted a V12....

Not even sure how to respond to something like this!

Technically it's not a quote since it's not in quotation marks. There's more than one case of a reporter screwing up a simple technical explanation and repating something incorrect.

Re: Wall St. Journal article about GM.

She must have seen the old Pontiac Tempest 4 banger that was indeed half of a V8. I don't think I want a person that ill informed running GM though.

The Wall Street Journal is usually pretty accurate but I'd wonder if a lot of what she actually said was left on the old Editing room floor. I read two papers every day and the local misquote can butcher an article to the point it completely changes the context from what the full article in the Seattle Paper said.

She may have actually said that where GM often offered several engines in a single chasses IE: 4cyl, V6 or straight and two or three V8's and built the chassis to handle the V8's at cost to fuel mileage with the 4 bangers they now build cars that are small 4 banger only and geared for fuel mileage. I was reading about a bare bones little Chevy 4 banger today that comes with hand crank windows and a minimal floor mat but sells for around 12,500 and gets around 35 mpg. A true box with wheels and 4 doors but for those that have serous commutes every day one might make it's own payments on fuel mileage and leave us with extra time to work on our projects as we don't have to repair a "work car" to be able to drive to work the next day.

48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six.
71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant.
77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

That's why I said "supposedly" quoting her in my first post.

There's nothing wrong with that. I had an '82 Cavalier that got 32 with a carb and 4 speed. Didn't even have a radio from the factory but never needed work. My wife's 94 Cav with 3.1 and automatic has a few options, such as A/C, but is generally a basic car, too. It gets 4-5 mpg better than the '05 Aveo with 1.6 DOHC engine I picked up for her this past spring. I've been thinking I should sell the Aveo (people seem to think that car gets 40 mpg) and build her a CJ with an old Mercedes turbo diesel engine for "all season" use.

Thus your screen name!
I kinda wanted to build my Jeep next. Appears I'm going to do a panel truck instead.
