fuel tank building research

For you guys that built your own tanks, where did you get the hardware from.Filler necks, flapper valves, etc.I've decided on building my own tank out of stainless,it's going to be fastened to a toolbox wich in turn will be bolted to the bed.I want to keep my spare and gain room in the cab.I've seen some filler necks on the catalogs and street rod publications but I've been unable to find a company's website that deals strictly with gas tank components.I would like to incorporate as many safety features as I can on this thing.Any help will be greatly appreciated.HF

If you don't mind spending money, check out aircraft parts. I had a friend who had a custom built tank for his boat made to fit in under the bow. He had a company that specializes in aircraft stuff custom make it for him. He then had the nice braided line in about 3/4" size from the tank back to the engine. It was a Mercruiser 350 Chevy with a 4 BBL and sucked back the fuel big time. His only problem was an inability to get the tank guage to read accurately given the shape of the tank. When it said 1/2 full it was a whole lot less than 1/2. (we ran out on the river and had to flag down another boat for a tow and call his wife to meet us with the Suburban and some extra fuel).

I bought a stainless cap and a weld on bung - they are available if you are interested as the person who is building y tank is using something else for the filler. PM me if you want some info as I would like to sell them, have no use for them now.

Oh, to answer your question about where to find some stuff, I finally figured out to search for custom harley tanks. Lots of good stuff out there as so many people build their own tanks for their motorcycles. That's where I finally found my cap and the weld on bung.

Here's what I bought and was going to use. It's a vented cap.
