1992 Steering wheel to a 71 truck

Hey, just wondering if anyone has put a 92 Chevy steering wheel on a 1971 GMC Truck? I noticed the splined bushing in the back on the wheel is not flush like the original wheel.

Welcome to the board, this is the best site on the web for info on chevy trucks. The swap your talking about has been done thousands of times over and in fact I think that in the FAQ section if you look for it there is a post about the easy way to make the horn button work with the old style horn tab. That wheel should bolt right on. In fact about any GM wheel until they started putting in air bags will fit.

I have one in my truck now...makes it SO much more
Comfortable to drive. The horn button is easy. Just file a little bit off the nub on the connector wire and it pops right in and holds to the original canceling cam.

I appreciate the reply's. It seems that the back of the 1992 steering wheel has a tapered collar on it, doesnt seem to butt up to the column tight. Do you guys have a gap between the back of the steering wheel and the column or does it fit tight? Maybe when i finally tighten it down all the way the gap will go away. Brett

I believe you have to use the white nylon collar from your 71 behind the 92 wheel. Just a bit of filing to it. (Piece that holds spring and horn contact) I have about a 1/8" gap behind wheel when tightened.

The one I used bolted up just fine. I didn't do any filing, modifing or anything involving a BFH.

I did, but now I don't. I used a Dremel tool with a small grinding wheel and worked it up, down and around the taper to increase the overall diameter equally while maintaining the taper. It really didn't take much to reduce the gap from almost 3/8" to what you see in this picture. Mine is a factory tilt.
