has anyone put a 68 panel/suburban on an 87 suburban 4x4 chassis???
Don't want to have to reinvent the wheel. Can any one shed some light on putting my 68 2wd 1/2 ton panel body on my 87 straight axle 4x4 suburban chassis? I don't need a step by step , just any info that would make this REALY harder than it should be. For instance, how many of the body mounts do we have to move/ fabricate? I know there is 2 1/2 inches of wheelbase difference but I believe we can either lose part of it in the wheel wells and make up some on the center bolt to spring alignment or redrill the rear springs to make the wheelbase shorter. Do I need to hybrid the radiator support? Any help would be appreciated. We have done other body swaps( 54 Studebaker Lowey coupe on an s-10 chassis, 49 German Ford Taunus on an s-10 etc. )Those were hotrods and whatever worked was ok. This project is to be an every day work truck driver that shouldn't have too many features that don't operate as they should. Thanks for listening, hope to hear that some one has done something similar!!!!

Not going to be much help, but I've put a 72 burb on an 04 3/4 ton chassis and it required taking 26+ inches out of the frame, cutting off all the existing body mounts and fabricating new ones.

Sounds like you had yourself quite a project there. Did you retain all of the computers etc? I am electronically challenged, so wish to avoid anything not mechanical!! A couple of switches for the trans and we're done,,,so to speak. I just happen to have both vehicles in the yard, the 68 without running gear and the 87 with a rusty body. I am just trying to find out if it's a REALY bad idea or not.

If you type the words "burb (or Suburban) on a late model frame" into the GOOGLE search box at the top of this page, click on the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com" and click on the GOOGLE button you will find a few threads on the subject. Just make sure the thread you are looking at refers to your style of truck. (Hits will include all years) I think the '64-'66 frames would apply, they are basically the same.
