Stepside fender gaskets?

My stepside had the remnants of gaskets/weatherstrips between the fender and bedside when I took her apart. Sometime within the last two years of my build Ive seen someone sell them. Now that I want them I cant find them or even any indication that they exist.
Ive talked to some other guys (with steppers) and they are divided on whether or not they exist.

Sooo, All you stepsiders, Do the gaskets(?) exist or not? If so,---who's the lucky company thats going to get my money?!

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

When I took mine apart, it also had remnants of some sort of gasket. When I put it back together, I used something called fender welt. I know they used it on older trucks, but don't know if its correct for our trucks. But worked great.

Mine had a putty like stuff when I took it apart 22K actual miles 1 owner. I put windshield setting tape/rope made by 3M between them when I put it back together.

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

Im thinking that I might drop by the local chevy dealer (body shop) and see if they have anyone around---with enough age (!) to know what they did----or what exactly the "putty" might be.

I have used the actual fender welting on a 40's resto once------keyword here is Once!
Man that stuff was tuff working with to get the correct reveal throughout the run. In this case, I dont believe I want a reveal.

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

I took the time to look thru the factory assembly manual (man, they missed a good opportunity to add an index to that thing), anyway, I found the drawing that shows the stepside fender--and it refers to using a "plastic seam cement", nothing more--

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

They did not come with the fender welt through 67-72 No offense to anyone but I personally don't like the way fender welt looks.

72bowtiesteper, The tail lights are 55-59 step side.

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

Tim Christian,

I looked into the windshield setting tape/rope-- Do remember the diameter you used? There seems to be a few diff. diameters. I assume you are satisfied with the results?

Love your truck, by the way!! lol

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

Yes I used the 1/4 I think I remember the 3/8 being to thick. I put it on the fender before installing and smashed it semi flat. Been a few years back and don't remember like I use to! LOL!

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

Just for future reference, in case anyone else has a question about "fender gaskets"!!

The actual product name is: 3M Windo-Weld ribbon sealer #08610 . This is the part number for the 1/4" ribbon. In addition they have 3/8", 5/16" and one the is 1/8 x 1/4"

The product can be found at Oriellys or Napa--and Im sure other auto parts stores.
Price is between $14 and $19. for a 15' roll

Hope this info helps someone else,, (thanks Tim for the direction)

X-2 on the welt. Just my opinion. I didn't use any sealer, but my fenders were extremely flat where they sealed to the bed. 3M ribbon seal is what I would use, and make sure it doesn't stick out

Re: Stepside fender gaskets?

Im sure the fender welt Will work. But remember, it will have a bead revealed at the top.

I believe this was the correct method for trucks in the 50's. I was talking to a friend of mine the other day and mentioned to him that I was looking for--somethng to use, his reply was to simply use the thick rubber electrical insulating tape. Cheap and easy to find, stays pliable ??
