converting a 69 Longhorn to a dually

I'm converting a 69 Longhorn with a Eaton rear end to a flat bed dually. For the front I have dually hubs from a 72 tow truck. Is there a difference between the dual wheel and single wheel spindles or will I also require the spindles from the 72 tow truck?

As for the rear I'm guessing all I have to do is install longer studs? If required I can also purchase the dually rear end or just the drums from the same 72 tow truck, but I believe the tow truck rear is a Dana 60.

Re: converting a 69 Longhorn to a dually

The only reason that you would need new spindles is to support the dually style rims for the front otherwise the tires would sit too far in, possibly the same with the rear, but if you are turning it into a flatbed your original axle with longer aids might do it. Make sure it is done right though you don't want to lose your wheels while you are driving down the road.

Does the '72 have front drums or disks? I'm not sure what the one tons had. On the rear it is my understanding that longer studs can be used. A couple of things to consider: one is that parts are a lot easier to find and cheaper for the Dana than the Eaton, and two, (and this probably wouldn't make a difference with a flat bed) the '72 Dana rear end will be about an inch and a half wider overall than the '69 Eaton. I also think some of the dual wheels center with the studs and some center with the hub.

If you type the words "dually wheels on a 3/4 ton" into the GOOGLE search box at the top of this page, click on the circle in front of "67-72chevytrucks.com" and click on the GOOGLE button you will find some threads on the subject. Just make sure the thread you are looking at refers to your style of truck. (Hits will include all years)
