How to make kick panel pods????
So I decided I would install the speakers my wife bought me last year in my yesterday. I made a speaker ring and used a piece of 3/16" plywood. I think it is 3/16". I used dowels to stand off the speaker ring. I wrapped it with fleece and stapled it to the backside of the plywood. Now I bought some resin and planning on applying resin tonight. Do I need to use fiberglass mat or will the fleece work. The ring is secured with dowels and the plywood back. Some forums say yes some say no..... Any help I would appreciate it!!!

Re: How to make kick panel pods????
your on the right track with your form, looks good.
yes you need to add fiberglass, the strength is in the glass not the resin. i use mostly .75 oz fiberglass mat, it wraps and contours a lot better than the heavier mat. for kicks 3 or layers is good, rough sand them, rough fill with body filler and wrap in vinyl. paint grade is a little more complicated in that you have to get everything perfect. you can also use the Bed liner in a spray can to cover them if you don't mind black. you need to resin the fleece on your frame to stiffen it up for fiberglassing. but it will be very weak until you add the mat and resin. the glass will need to wrap all the way around all edges or it will delaminate from the wood. so sand your frame down accordingly. look in my build if you want more pictures and methods for glassing. normally i would send you over to fibberglassforums.com but the site died a few months back some pics here, more in my build

Re: How to make kick panel pods????
So I have resin and used 3/4 fiberglass veil. I just put another layer on 1 weak spot. I think it has come out pretty good. Just wondering how I should do the back side.

Re: How to make kick panel pods????
I removed 90% of my backing board (wood) You can put a layer of glass in side allso and not really worry about smoothness.By taking my board off I gained at least 3/8"

Re: How to make kick panel pods????
speakers perform better in an enclosure, i would not cut out the back.
for strength you should build up to a 3/16'' wall thickness, keep adding layers until you have a minimum of 3/16'' then you can sand down the high spots and add some filler to smooth out the surface for paint/carpet/bedliner. your back looks a little thin. add some glass back there to for strength. usually the back is made out of 1/2'' or 3/4'' mdf or plywood.
