Strange kickdown problem

My kickdown came off carb. I went to put it back on and it pulled out about 6 inches then I felt resistance and then I pulled through it and it stopped and upon release it sprung back a little. Just like it was working correctly. I then adjusted it to the new spot and put it back on carb linkage, went for test drive and it works perfectly.
You can see in the pic where the old spot was on the cable, it is the mangled up area.
