s-10 chassis swap cab mount ?

Ok, so I have been fabricating my cab mounts for my s-10 chassis swap, basiclly going from the blueprint from jeffs51 but have ran into something I'm not sure about. I need to know where the hole for the cab bushings should be located on the top plate of the mount. should it be centered or offset ? I am building my mounts out of some metal that we had setting around the shop and its pretty thick(overkill) but it was free! I just didn't want to have to drill the holes in the wrong spot and have to start all over.

I hope I'm not to late. I saw your question yesterday but did not have time to respond.

I'm going to start by telling you the way I think would be the easiest to do and easiest to understand. The way I did it was far more complicated than it needed to be, but I will include it as well. I will also include a bunch of pics. Hope they help.

Position the mounts exactly 2 inches forward of the oblong slotted hole on the outside of the chassis. My chassis is a 94 extended cab version that I shortened, but I am assuming that this slotted hole is in the same place on all years. You can see that about 12 inches to the right of the slotted hole is the splice where I shortened the frame so this had no effect on the location of the slotted hole as it is forward of the splice.



This should be very close to where they will be welded in when you get to that point. Before you do any actual welding you will need to have all your cab mounts clamped in place (or tacked) and you will need to have all the front sheet metal bolted on to get your front wheels centered in the wheel wells. Obviously this pic is of the finished project and the 2 inches worked for me. Clamp them in place with a C clamp or Bar clamp.

Measure the distance between the actual front mount holes in the cab floor.
Transfer that measurement to your Front cab mounts. That's about as straight forward as it gets.

For the rear cab mounts I didn't heave to worry as much because I will have to drill my own holes in the cab floor. I just made sure they were located directly under the original channel that is welded to the bottom of the cab floor where the original cab mounts used to be attached. Just center the whole that you drill in these mounts. I plan on simply setting a steel plate on top of my original S10 rubber mounting pad so it has something flat against it instead of the channel itself.


How I located my front cab mounts: (The complicated way)



To start with, I positioned the mounts exactly 2 inches forward of the oblong slotted hole on the outside of the chassis.This should be very close to where they will be welded in when you get to that point. I used c clamps to hold the mounts in place and gently lowered the cab down till it just touched. Get the mounting holes in the floorboard as close to centered, side to side, and back to front, on the mounts, as you can. With a Sharpie make a dot down through each of the cab mount holes in the floorboard. These dots will be used as a reference only as it will be nearly impossible to get them centered exactly on the mounts with your cab sitting on them. Pull the mounts off and place them in a vice inside edge ti inside edge as shown. Measure to the center and make a line (The one going right to left) Then for the other axis ( the lines running from top of the pic to the bottom) Simply measure the distance between the dots, center to center. For me this was 3 inches. Now measure 1.5 inches out from where the mounts touch. This will give you your exact hole location. Drill where the lines on each mount intersect. I am going to reuse the factory S10 cab mounts.

I set my cab height by setting it on 4X4 wood blocks. They measure 3 1/2 by 3 1/2. I set my metal cab mounts to this height but the rubber s10 pads will add another inch or so.

That is going to help a lot of these guys with their frame swaps and may become a go to thread.
As it seems that there are a lot of guys who have the want to who don't also have the ability to visualize things without seeing a photo you have done a great job of showing them what they need to do.

Thanks for this info. This will be very helpful. I was trying to build the brackets in my spare time at work were I have a mill to bore the holes, but it looks like I will just wait to drill the holes untill I'm ready to start mounting the cab. Thanks agian for the info and good pics.

I am by no means an expert, this is my first time build. But this is what seemed to work well for me.

Yes Kevinskustoms I would suggest mocking it up before drilling, Just in case!

I also mocked mine up by clamping everything then fitting the sheet metal and then marking the holes using the original cab mount holes. Instead of body mount bushings, I used a rigid rubber pad between the mount and cab.

what is the total height of your mounts for the cab including the rubber mount?

nice mounts! i'll post some pictures of my 59 mounted on a 69 3/4 ton frame that uses pipe! real old school!
