Floatless Senders Ease Moving Fuel Tanks
One aspect of moving fuel tanks to under-bed can be simplified. A standard fuel cell 12" deep by 24" wide by 16" front-to-rear fits great under '66 C10's(and some other years). But orig. type float-arm gauge-senders don't have room to install and swing properly due to interference by this size, and some other sized, cell's baffling.
I just simplified one such installation by using a floatless sending unit that I put into a cell I'd bought for ~$20 at a salvage yard. The aluminum cell had the above dimensions, fit great, nice ground clearance, and holds 20 gallons. This sender needs to be purchased having proper ohm-rating to match your gauge; and it can be bought to fit tanks as shallow as ~6" and as deep as any of our 60's pickups could possibly use--even some for 60" deep tanks, iirc! Being designed as adjustable to function with different tank-depths, you just cut off the end of the aluminum sensing tube--to 1/2" shorter than tank depth--with a tubing cutter, and then snip an inner wire flush with the new, now shorter end of the tube. It uses 2 wires--one runs directly to a ground near the tank; 2nd one runs to "sender" terminal on the gauge. It also fits 'standard', 5-screw, tank-holes drilled for many after-mkt. gauge-senders, like SW, VDO, AutoMeter, and others. Below is a link to one online seller of this unit, prolly developed initially for the marine industry, yet works so well in this auto application. Surely there are other sellers who sell similar units, maybe cheaper. *I actually found 2 or more online sites and kinda chose this one just randomly. Has fantastic technical support and actually encourages you to phone them for guidance and help.* **One important caveat I accidentally learned: One gauge-maker, VDO, both well-known and respected, I guess, has an odd/peculiar ohm-rating. Where the gauges that use 33-240 ohm senders(or some range real close to this), VDO needles respond opposite to the others. IE, where 33 represents one extreme(either FULL or EMPTY)on most brands, it represents the other extreme on VDO.........and 240 does likewise. No advantage or disadvantage on either; but just keep a heads-up if ordering a 33-240 ohm compatible sender! VDO was the only one I found with this peculiarity.** >> file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Administrator/Desktop/Floatless%20Fuel%20Level%20Senders.htm << |

Awesome i need a sending unit that will work with the foam in the tank. I might look them up.

That's a link to a file on your computer (doesn't work for anyone else). Do you have the link for the webpage?
