402 shortbox build!

I'm starting a build thread for my 64 fleetside shortbox. I acquired the truck and a well built 402 big block in a trade for a 68 charger that needed more work than I was interested in doing. My plans are to swap the manual 4 speed for a built 350 or 400 turbo automatic. The truck will be used for cruising and an occasional trip to the the strip or autocross etc. Plans are to paint it a bright maroon/red metallic with a light interior of nickel metallic and a sandstone color. Lots of pics to come. Here is how it sat when I bought it.[IMG][/IMG]

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Found out the perches I'm currently using are for the 6 cylinder and wont allow clearance for the exhaust. I ordered the correct v8 tubular mounts yesterday. Will be swapping those out this weekend.

"Rebuilt" the heater box... vacuumed out the mouse nests, leaves, dirt and rust. Put in a new blower motor, fan, fresh coat of paint and new cable.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Put the new heater controls and cables in last night. Took a bit of work to get the defroster flapper to break free and move freely but it works great now.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Painted the glove box door the sandstone color and cleared it, got the new chrome trim from Brothers Truck as well as a new glovebox. I actually got it all put together and put in the dash last night but didn't have my phone along to take a pic. More pics tonight maybe.

Your 402 big block looks like it belongs in there. I think you have an excellent start on your truck build. Keep us updated and thanks for bringing us along for the ride!

Re: 402 shortbox build!

Thanks for the compliments guys. Got the glovebox cleared and installed last night. Pic to follow. This weekend I'll be bolting the front end back on and loading up all the new parts I've got to take to my brothers shop (with heat) swapping the manual for an auto 400 and getting it running. Then its body work time!

I'll be painting the heater vents and inside firewall black this weekend and installing the firewall mat also. Kick panel vents will be getting new gaskets etc. as well.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

A few questions for ya... If I decide to keep the in cab fuel tank, is there a problem with fuel smell after filling? I kind of like where the fill cap is in its stock location rather than filling thru the bed floor if I did a rear mount tank. Also will a DIN mount radio fit where the old shaft style radio used to go? I like a good sounding stereo (I install car audio for a living) any suggestions on speaker placement, anybody have pics of where they put speakers in these trucks? I'm thinking maybe some small subs (6 1/2" or 8") behind the seat to left or right of gas tank if they fit.

Re: 402 shortbox build!

If you have a new filler neck hose and good clamps, you will not have any fuel smell in the cab.

On speaker placement...
This is a common topic of discussion on this board, and it seems to vary from build to build.
In my 66 stepside, I did a total custom set up and am pushing 7 speakers in that cab.
In my 64 tow truck I am going to shoot for maintaining a period correct look, but still have premium sound so in that I am going to have to get creative. I have also started stock piling stuff for that.

So the point of what I am asking back to you is this:
How much modifiying do you want to do, or are willing to do?
