Temp guage ?
Hey just curious, I got the truck street legal and registered and just now getting to drive it. My question is, I have factory guages and a new temp sender and was just wondering where everyone using the factory guage, where does the needle sit on the factory guage. I am going to put in autometer guages eventually but just wondered where everyones factory guage say while driving. Thanks

1/4 to 1/2 180 degrees to 200 at 1/2

Just off cold at normal operation temp, 190 as measured with IR gun.

I am running a 195 degree thermostat only because I know that small blocks like to run a bit on the warmer side. My guage when warm reads about 5/8 to hot. I am happy with that reading because I'm good at 200 degrees. The needle reads an overheat at 220 degrees, which is just about overheating.

Its going to vary a lot depending on the sender you have. A replacement sender will read different than an original. I had to add a resistor inline with my wire to get mine to not read full hot at normal operating temp.

The factory temp gauge in the dash is not there to tell me the temperature, it is there to tell me when there are changes. Let the engine run and warm up to operating temperature, then use a thermometer (IR is safer) to see it the coolant temp is where you want it, then note where the gauge is. Any large, sudden changes and you will know that something is wrong.

Ok thanks everyone, I did just put another temp sender in it and at operating temp it is about at 5/8 and rolls back and forth a little but doesnt go farther than that so I should be good till I get real guages on it. Once again thanks everyone for the help!
