Carb Help

I need to rebuild my Edelbrock Carb (1406) and been looking at kits online from $26.00 to $40.00 is there any difference they look the same?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/EDELBROCK-CA...299906&vxp=mtr

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Edelbrock-Ca...c92a06&vxp=mtr

I need to clean this mess to. After I remove the carb and rebuild it,, what gaskets will I need to reattach the intake manifold and make the bolts set so they don't leak oil onto the manifold? I guess you don't use lock washers on the manifold?

Re: Carb Help

From what I was told at the parts store, the one rebuild kit covers all of the Edlebrock carb models. I think I still have the box that mine came in, I'll see if I can get the part number off of it for you.

Re: Carb Help

What can I use to clean the carb after I take it apart, as you can see it needs cleaning.

Re: Carb Help

I used the spray kind of choke and carb cleaner worked for spraying out he inside of the carb, if you have heavy oxidation on the inside of yours like you do on the outside, you may need to dunk it in a parts cleaner and maybe even a wire brush or something like that. The part number for the rebuild kit I bought was 1477, which appears to contain all of the parts in your first eBay link. Also of note, my rebuild kit did not come with an accelerator pump shaft, only the cup; the first eBay link has a complete accelerator pump too, so for $26 that doesn't look like a bad deal at all.

Re: Carb Help

I would also see about getting a new fuel filter too I don't think it would hurt should only be a couple bucks at your local parts store.

Gaskets to be replaced definitely all the intake manifold gaskets there should be a total of 5, 1 for the distributor gear 2 for the intake/exhaust holes on the manifold 2 smaller ones that go on the front and back of the manifold as well, local parts store should carry that too, as far as bolts just see about getting some intake manifold bolts you don't put any washers of any sort on there.

If it was me personally when I had everything off I know your truck can't run but I would try to find the sole issue of where the oil is coming from and why.

Hope it helps!

Re: Carb Help

I wouldn't pull the intake. Simply pull each intake bolt out, clean it with a wire brush, seal it with liquid teflon, torque it back in place and then you won't have any oil leaks.

Re: Carb Help

What is the reasoning behind the rebuild? If you are trying to solve an issue, I would rebuild the carb first, reinstall it and see if it clears up your problem. Then pull your intake if you need to. Always do one thing at a time.

Re: Carb Help

I'm rebuilding the Carb because it smells like gas every time I park my truck after driving it. I was told the floats are sticking is the likely problem.
And my bolts leak oil onto my intake. someone said there is a cream that you put on the threads to keep them from loosening up all the time.
Does anyone know the torque speck for a aluminum manifold?

Re: Carb Help

I looked at it last night, if i remember correctly it's 30ft/lbs is the correct here's a link for you to use in the future if ever needed. http://boxwrench.net/specs/chevy_sb.htm

if your concerned about them leaking just go get some telfon tape make sure it's tight and wrap it around the bolt about a total of 2 times and you should be good plus might even be cheaper.

Re: Carb Help

I just read Edelbrock's page it says start at 20# then 40# and use Permatex Red RTV Silicone on the threads. So Now I need to find or buy a Torque Wrench so I can clean and do the bolts while the carb is removed.

Re: Carb Help

It smells like gas because your fuel pressure is too high or more likely because the fuel in the carb is boiling from the heat soak from your intake. Waste of time rebuilding the carb. Just install a phenolic carb spacer.
If your floats where sticking you'd know it! It'd be flooding big time!
Here's a link to some bolt sealer. Your local parts store will have it.
Torque them to 30 lbs/ft.

Re: Carb Help

It only smells like gas when I shut off the truck, It starts right up if I hit the peddle one time to set the choke. From what someone said that it sounded like the float was sticking and letting gas drain into the carb.

Re: Carb Help

I already ordered the rebuild kit and new Black Edelbrock air cleaner. You can see what the beach does to chrome when you live to close to the water.

The auto parts store said this is a High Rise Manifold and 2" over a normal Cast Iron Intake. Do you think I need to go a inch higher? Does the spacer need to be Wood, Plastic or Aluminum ??

Re: Carb Help

I'd go plastic in a 1/2 inch like here.
