Okay! We are going to get it driving

My brother, dad and I bought a clean original '66 Big Window SWB many many years ago. It's been sitting untouched or worked on for like 8 years. We are planning on completely resto-modding it into a show truck type deal. We realized we will never be able to restore it so we are going to put it all back together and get it running/driving for a stupid low budget of $1500-2K total.

That will have to include motor, trans, wiring, suspension, wheels and tires, brakes etc.

I just don't know if we should leave it 6 lug and hope we can find some nice wheels (20's or 22's) or convert it to 5 lug.

I'm looking for an 88-90 Suburban now to get the motor, trans and front suspension off of. We can't weld so the Suburban rear-end is out of the question.

Anyway, I am feeling inspired and thought I'd post about it.

I'm tuned in. Anyone that mentions resto mod, can't weld , 22's and $1500-$2000 to complete the project on a budget definately has my attention! Let's get this party started with some pics of said truck.

Re: Okay! We are going to get it driving

Are there any threads on here that say what all swap part years will work? I need to hit the junk yards for suspension and a rear-end.

I was going to just buy everything off of an 84-87 truck (A-arms, spindles, calipers etc etc)

Re: Okay! We are going to get it driving

For front disc brakes, you just need the parts from a '71-'87 pickup or a Suburban or Blazer thru '91. But if you are going with dropped spindles, and springs, then there are a few different ways to go. You can also go with 6 lug discs, a couple different ways. I would just leave the 12 bolt in the truck and change to the aftermarket 5 lug conversion axles. That is unless your original axles are in good shape at the wheel/axle bearing surface. Then you might save some money by pliugging and redrilling to the 5x5 wheel stud pattern. The hub register will also need machined down.

There are several links to threads on all of this, located in the '60-'66 FAQ index.

Thank you, sir! I'd love to buy the 5 lug axle kit but they are around $300 I think? Not on this budget haha.

You are correct. I haven't checked in a while and they seem to have gone up in price, and others appear to not be available any longer. You used to be able to get a pair of axles for about $225.

Re: Okay! We are going to get it driving

I found a 5 lug coil spring rear end out of 71 or 72 for $100. Is that a decent price?

Re: Okay! We are going to get it driving

Yes that is a good deal......I would jump on that. Be aware that that 12 bolt will also be 1.5" wider than your current 12 bolt. That may or may not be an issue depending on your wheels and tires.

Yeah that is true. I'm not too worried about it but now I am second thinking my plan. It's $100 for the whole 5 lug rear setup plus about $75 in gas and food to go get it.

I can order the replacement Moser 5 lug axles for $240 shipped and have newer safer axles that are forged.

Hmmmm
