Mounting sport mirrors on 1972.

So i found a old thread on how to locate the holes for the sport mirrors. What i need to know is what size holes did the factory drill in the doors to mount the mirrors? Were the factory screws flat or domed on the head? Are you guys using stainless steel screws or crome? Where are you buying them? How are you holding the backing plates in place? Silacone? Can you get your hand in the door to hold the backer in place to start the screws? Thanks for any help.

yes, you can get your hand in there--with some twisiting around. Definitely a 2 man job.

Not impossible with one person but easier with two. I used gaffers tape i had to hold backing plate in place. Duct tape would probably be fine. The repro mirrors bought included countersunk phillips head screws. I dont think they are stainless. I believe the holes are 1/4" as the screws are pretty small. I believe they are #8, possibly #10.

Thanks for the come back. I just bought the backer plates from a member and your right the screw holes in them are small. Do you know how the factory mounted the plates if at all.

They weren't fastened. When you take the screws out of the mirrors the backing plates fall to the bottom of the door...

Well thats one way to do it. I'll bet that has bummed a lot of people out over the years. Do you see any problem with glueing them in place when you mount them?

Believe it or not I have removed old mirrors and installed new ones on a 72 without removing the door panel! You loosen all three screws but take one screw out at a time. Rotate the mirrorand imstall the new mirror withe the screw you removed. Repeat two more times. To be honest its probably easier to just remobe the door panel!

Ober the years I have always looked for trucks thy had sport mirrors by the extra holes in the door after the precious owner taxked some aftermarket mirrors on. This is a sure indicator that there is probably a mirror mounting bracket lauing in the bottom of the door from the removal process. I had this luck a pot inthe 80's when there seemed to be a lot more of these trucks in the wrecking yards. Not so much any more. I couldnt believe my luck ealier rhis year when I ran across a 72 highlander with a factory tilt and a lot of other good parts i stripped off including a rust free core support!

I take my mirrors off when I store my Blazer, the cover fits better. I got annoyed with the backing plates so I but a dab of silicone on the backing plates before I installed them, now it's a one man job

Thats what i have been thinking. Once i get the door pannels back on i don't want to have to take them back off.

Double sided 3M tape is what I used. A lot cheaper than all the beer I have to buy to coax someone over to help.
