Carryall/Suburban - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi Everyone,
Brand new member w/a nagging question. I have a 64 4x4 tittled as a Carryall, was supposedly a goverment vehicle, was told Forest Service in Nevada. I ought to mention I have had this since 1975. Question the Forest Service as the original color is a light tan (not green & a dead ringer for mid 70s Santa Fe Tan or 78-81 Corvette Frost Beige). The question is : What is the difference between a Carryall & a Suburban? I thought for years it was the type of rear doors (mine has cargo doors) but with later Suburbans having the choice, not so sure, does anyone know for sure? Tittled in Texas and having Carryall there as body type only means that was what was put on tittle app. when ownership changed.

It's my understanding that when GM started making them in the 50's they went by "Suburban Carryalls" (both names together). The 1961 catalog called them "Suburban Carryalls"

Then in the late 60's it was shortened to just "Suburban". But the earlier versions seem to use the "Suburban" and "Carryall" names interchangeably. I may be wrong but thats how it was told to me.

The title name means nothing really. My '66 Suburban's Michigan title says "Station Wagon".

yep my 65 Montana title says station wagon as well.

Thanks for the reasonable answer to my confusion,it would seem the general intended it that way. I do feel the need to correct you on the start of suburbans, it was in the 30s. Not sure about how early, but have seen as early as 36.

The first year for the Suburban was 1935. The Suburban is the longest running vehicle model name in automotive history. The 75th anniversary was in 2010.

Thanks for you interest, but don't have any readily available pics. To add insult to injury, it is once more in only a semi-movable state due to an upgade project that is stalled at the moment due to more projects than there is time.

I have always thought that the carryall referred to the one ton panels. I us to travel at work in 1965 in a 63 carryall which was a 1ton
