Azratrods 1972 Chevy C50
I bought the C50 a few months ago after I found out my buddy Dino had sold his. I called Dino to pick his brain and run a few ideas past him. I decided right after hanging up the phone with him was the first step was some new suspension and gearing. The 4 speed tranny, 2 speed rear end, and 6.50-8.85 gear ratio wont cut it. I made some calls and found out another buddy had some Topkicks/Kodiaks sitting in his recycling yard. So picked up a chassis on Monday(10.28.13) and started the build that afternoon.
How I found the old girl. Sold the box back to the guy I just bought the truck from. Mocking up a 72 long bed. Looks like we need to shorten the frame. The 2004 Kodiak chassis. Now I have a bolt pattern I can buy wheels for. The Kodiak chassis stripped and waiting for the scrapper. The new Dana/Spicer rear end out of the Kodiak. The new front end out of the Kodiak. The rear end and a section of the old frame that was torched off. About to spread the rails a little and remove the old cross members. We didn't cut them out because we may need them later to reinforce the frame. Removed the old cross members and reinstalled the Kodiaks. Their are a few key holes and mounting points that are needed. |

Re: Azratrods 1972 Chevy C50
Thanks guys. The gear ratio in the Kodiak is a 4.57. The ratios in the old C50 rear end were 6.50 to 8.85. And that was with a 4 speed tranny and a 2 speed rear end. We could only get up to about 40mph.

Very nice build.
Being a AZ native, but stuck in MD right now, I can't wait to get back and do something similar with rust free metal.

Re: Azratrods 1972 Chevy C50
Looks Great!
My opinion, I think some later 70s Chevy Dually rear fenders would not only go with the curves & angles of the body lines but would probably bolt right on too, clean salvage parts and hassle free. You could probably even bolt them on lower (up & down) than where they are normally on say a stock 78 dually test position 'em until they look right. just thinking

Re: Azratrods 1972 Chevy C50
Ill be driving her to Dinos party. She will also be at the Goodguys show that weekend along with my 64 F100.
I have a nice set of 72 step side bed fenders that Im going to narrow and mount. I don't want to use fenders off a truck past 72. Im trying to keep it all in that 67-72 range. We planned this build out in our heads for a few months. It was going to be a build similar to Dinos. But that damn original rear end and its gearing sucked. So once I found the Kodiak chassis and took some measurements I knew that was the direction we were going. I like the running boards but they kinda hurt the lower body line. The truck originally had 2 huge belly tanks just behind the steps. Their isn't room for them now. Im kinda thinking about removing the steps, bobbing the end of the front fenders, and bolting up some semi truck fuel tanks. The type with the steps formed into them. Not sure yet |

Nice build! I would love to build a crewcab version of it.

Re: Azratrods 1972 Chevy C50
Yeah the Kodiak front end is next. Dinos party and Goodguys is coming up next week. The truck will be at both events and I didn't want to run out of time so we paused at where we are at now. Well start back up next month.
