Heater core questions
I have a '85 GMC C1500. I suspect the heater core has a slight seep as I can smell antifreeze in the cab and my windows get foggy. It must be really slight as I don't have to add coolant.
Anyone know the procedure to replace the core? Is this job done from the inside, outside, or both? Where can one buy a good quality copper/brass heater core? Thanks |

Re: Heater core questions
I don't remember the exact procedures, but it involved unbolting from the engine side of the firewall, so, both sides. IIRC, procedures will differ whether AC or not.
I didn't really get into the copper/brass vs alum. I sourced alum locally, they used to be copper/brass. Didn't matter, got heat back in the truck. Check your hose connections, you may have a weeper right at the firewall. (I said "may" lol, doesn't hurt to check as hoses will have to be removed anyway.)

Re: Heater core questions
If you want a copper or brass one you need to call your local parts houses and have them go open the boxes and look to see what's in the box. when I worked at the parts store all types were the same part number it was random what was in the box but most new will be aluminum since its cheaper. but you never know how long ones been on the shelf just hope they have a nice dusty box that has been on the top shelf for years

Re: Heater core questions
I would stick with a copper heater core - and try OEM online discount suppliers for probably not much more than aftermarket cost.
This is an excellent write up on the whole HVAC /heater core remove/replace. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ctuator+heater Even a non-mechanic like me can replace just the heater core in about 3 hours. If you A/C you should get a flex shaft for your ratchet to get the lower bolt and the inside corner of the evap box. |

Re: Heater core questions
And while you got it apart would be a good time to replace the blower on it too. Some guys on here swear the heat and air blows harder with a new blower on it.
