rear drums ok on a daily driver?

hey guys

Im building a daily driver 71 C10. so far, got the 5.3/4l60e in there and just rebuilt the front suspension and brakes. stock rims. stock 5 lug 12 bolt

Havent replaced the master yet.

Im moving on to the back suspension and brakes next.

I know rear discs are better. i know most of the stopping power is from the front brakes (mine are disc)

Im either going to rebuild the stock rear drums or upgrade to disc.

truck will never see track, never raced ... just to and from work and around town....

Question: Are the rear drums going to be ok for a daily driver or should i spend the extra cash and get the disc stuff?

From disk and rear drum is more than adequate on a half ton pickup that does not tow or haul much. I have this combo on my truck and I really can't imagine it stopping much better (well, not $500 better anyways, lol). Rear discs look great if you are running larger wheels and want some bling.

as long as you are not stuck in severe grid lock traffic every day... id say you will be fine...

Seriously? How many millions of these trucks were produced, plus the next generation? and none of them ever had discs on the rear, for that matter a bunch of them had drums on the front.
While I almost always defend drum brakes, even I think discs are far superior in the front. Discs are far less likely to pull under braking, especially on the front. They are more forgiving and less prone to fading.
Properly maintained drums are just fine on the rear. Discs are an expensive conversion for no real gain......other than looks, as previously stated by leddzepp.

The rear does about 25% of braking, so drums are fine.

Disc are always better. BUT with that said GM started putting disc on the rear of 1/2 ton trucks in 1999 and stopped in 2005. The main reason was that in the Northern states it was causing too many problems. It was found that because most 1/2ton trucks are not working trucks the discs have corrosion issues due to little use.

So to answer.... Drum are more than fine. Under most situations rear discs are for show rather than whow.

Unless your building a corner carving truck with 600hp plus rear drums are fine.Most semis on the road still run all drums a lot of small cars still use rear drums.Another point rear drums are cheaper and last longer then rear disc do.

i agree with mmiddle, never owned a truck with rear discs except my 58
i know my 97 dodge was rear drum, i think my 09 sierra is drum too

Drums all the way around on my DD trucks; no problems. A truck with good drum brakes will stop a lot better than most would like to believe.
