How rare is this option?

Hello fellow forumers! Recently, my family has acquired a 1971 Chevy C-20 with the Custom Camper option. I'm wondering if this is a rare option because we can't find anything about any Custom Camper 20 option anywhere. Even in the Chevy truck restoration catalogue we can't find any badging or parts referring to a Custom Camper option. What do we have here, a rare truck or something that is common.

Not rare at all, however the custom camper badges are not reproduced so you won't find them in any catalogue.

Re: How rare is this option?

It is just a "nice to have" option, but keep in mind it only gives you the nameplate - all other camper stuff, if ordered, will show up on the SPID. The nameplate also supersedes your fender trim level callout, so a more appropriate question is what else dies your truck have? Trim level, opts, etc. I have a 71 custom camper 20 also, it's a Cheyenne Super and that is what makes it a little desirable to someone (ok, maybe just me). Ha. Welcome, and post some pics!

Will do! I'll post them once my father brings it up to our house. For now, I'll tell ou a little about it. It's been in the family since 1973. It's a TRUE survivor. The paint is almost perfect, plus it's original. It's orange with 2 gas tanks. Which, by he way, is 2 gas tanks any rare?

I don't know much, but I do know exactly where Dornsife is. I was just there in Sept for the 7-Miler. Nice area to drive the Custom Camper/20!

I was unaware chevy offered 2 tanks in 71. According to everything I have read they created the square bodies for 2 tanks because they wanted to offer a 40 gallon fuel capacity. If I fact that is original I would be more interested in the 2 tanks instead of the emblems. I would do some research if I were you. 71 was the body before the square body and two years before it.

Same here, an extra gas tank isn't even on the sticker with all of the options included on the truck on the Glove Compartment door. My Great Grandfather, who was the previous owner, did modify the truck for long road trips. The truck has been in 48 states, so maybe at some point he installed it or maybe it was some sort of dealer installed add on.

They are probably dealer added saddle tanks. Very common on a camper truck. It could also have the optional factory auxiliary tank as well. We won't know until we see a picture

I know, right! What makes it even better is we know where the original camper part is and its in fair condition. We just need to buy it back. Other than that, the truck is as complete at any truck can get.

Re: How rare is this option?

Custom camper not too rare, but sounds like a nice truck. Too bad it doesnt have the rare "corvette engine" like you see mentionedin so many c list ads.

On a side note, i see the truck has the much sought after "E81 floorboard" option. I have parted a few rusty trucks and laughed to myself that they didnt have this option from the factory. What exactly is this actually in reference to? Is it the wood bed floor?
