something a little different?

so i have wanted to do something different with the engine and trans in my truck. every truck has either a small block or a big block, i want something different.
ive thought about doing a 5.3 swap, or another ls style engine...
but to be honest i dont have the cash or the know how.
but i found a guy locally who has some olds 455 rocket engine and trans hes looking to sell.
i thought having an old big block would be unique,
what are do you guys think?

Re: something a little different?

We stuck a 455 olds from a Vista Cruiser in a 79 swb. It made for a very fun truck and made a lot of 5.0 boys cry!

Re: something a little different?

those 455s were pretty peppy engines! my dad has a 68 delta 88 all stock with a 455, and it walks circles around my mild 350!

Re: something a little different?

I had a friend who put a bolt on 455 Olds into his 92 C10. Never was much for mpg no matter what he did, but when he hooked up his little travel trailer the mpg didn't drop.

When he first got the 455 in his truck had 3.55's, and got 13mpg. We swapped some 2.73's in, and it got 14 mpg. It also got faster since it wouldn't burn up the tires off the line as easily. I think he had a switch pitch for the 400 tranny.

Tranny was going out, and he swapped in a T200R4, and got 14 mpg. Thought it was lugging, and put the 3.55's back in, and got 14.

I would do it, and use Olds parts to give the truck the feeling as if it were an Olds truck. I thought about doing it with a 455 Buick I have in my garage to my truck.

Re: something a little different?

They used to swap Olds motors in place of the diesels in our trucks. Bolt in swap I think.

It was because the diesel was based on a Olds 350 block.

Re: something a little different?

If you find an Olds diesel factory powered truck ('78-'81), an Olds gas engine will drop right in. Just need to change torque converter. Not too many left though.

If I were you, I would swap in a Buick 350. 200 lbs lighter than a SBC, longer stroke than SBC which creates some wonderful torque. And because the block has long skirting, it is super smooth and quiet. Plus they are a handsome engine and the distributor is up front for easy tune-ups!

Re: something a little different?

Start looking for 350 diesel motor mounts... Several friends have swapped 455's into formerly Olds-based diesel trucks with very little headache. They make great tow rigs and hot rods.

4 door in the large cars dont hurt there value at all. that said if the car is rotted beyond repair you might as well part it.

I like the b and c body cars, but I just got the engine and trans, the guy has a few of these for demo derbies, he wasn't interested in selling whole cars

Thumbs up Re: something a little different?

I wouldn't think of putting in anything other than an LS engine. They already have the HP and will get better fuel mileage. If you want to change engines, the 5.3L would be your better engine swap for the trucks. It has more low end torque and will outlast any engine out there, if you take care of it. Hope this will help.

I just brought in a parts truck that did the olds motor conversion from a diesel. It looked very clean as if it was done by the factory.
